royterr 02-12-2006, 05:23 AM what is the main difference between Maya and Mr shaders?
wish is more flexible?
Is it true that MR shaders are more powerful when it comes to acheving photorealism?

Mr shaders are obviously used in conjunction with the Mental Ray Renderer which should come standard with Maya.
If you want effects such as water, glass etc to a photorealistic level it is advisable to use the Mental ray shaders as they have specific calculations for those effects.
Alternatively you can use Hypershade to create 10-20 nodes that produce the same effect, which one you decide to use is basically your preference as to the control you wish to have on the effect.
My advice: for SSS, water, glass etc use the MR shaders as they have physical effect controls, eg IOR, SSS density etc.
Cheers.
