View Full Version : DVD Burner - Pioneer or Sony?
Pretorian 02-11-2006, 05:19 PM I heard that Pioneer is much better if not the best DVD recorder. Is Sony so behid?
Is there so much diferences between both?
Can I get incompatibility in DVD players if I burn DVD's in Sony drives?
Thanks

Pioneer and Sony are both good. Pioneer invented the DVD-R format. Both companies make high-end drives, as well as cheaper drives.
Check the specifications before you buy one. There are 2 major formats.... DVD-R and DVD+R, often referred to as "plus" or "minus" formats.
Make sure your drive can burn to both. Also, make sure it can burn to both dual-layer formats... DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL. Some drives can play both, but not all can burn to both. Pioneer's upper model can burn to both. Once again, check the specs carefully.
There should be no compatibility issues between the drives, as long as those formats are supported.

Get the latest pioneer 1xx drive (110 I think is the latest) You will find they work with a wider range of media and make more compatible discs than the sonys. This opinion is based on tests I did around a year ago with several sony, pioneer and ricoh drives, plus 8 different dvd dyes.
Im currently using several pioneer 108/109 drives with G05 dye discs.

Pioneer has worked flawlessly for me.
Companies who make actual dvdr media test them on pioneer drives.
Nuff' said.

Great drive and rather cheap. Havnt had any coasters with it yet... and I burn ALOT.
Also check that site for reviews of the other drivers you are looking at. cdrinfo.com is very indepth with their reviews.

plextor are very good, but very expensive.
Here in australia.. they are more than twice the price of the BenQ which reviewed the same or better in some areas.

Sorry, I didn't know that was the case over there...I had a Sony burner before my plextor and it never had a problem before it died after 3 years of use...hope that helps and good luck with the decision.
