View Full Version : Power necessary for USB connector going to USB printer?
singularity2006 02-11-2006, 07:16 AM My mobo only has 2 back side USB ports so I have wired one to the USB hub on my Dell 2001FP monitor. I noticed however that when the monitor is off, it cuts the power to the USB ports. However, I want to use one of those USB ports for my USB printer, which I just ordered (I don't have it yet so I don't know exactly how this is all going to workout). So assuming the printer has its own power supply, which it does, will turning off my monitor cut power AND connectivity to the computer's USB port or will it cut power only? Will the printer work?

The monitor has a powered USB hub. That's a good thing, as it'll regenerate the power supply coming from its USB ports.
Otherwise, the power coming from the USB port on your computer may not be enough when split across many devices.
You'll just have to keep the monitor on while your printer is using the monitor's USB hub. :)

har har. okay okay. =)
I'm probably going to route my scanner into that sucker to free up space for the new printer. I didn't realize the new printer had ethernet, USB, and parallel... hehehe.
