View Full Version : C4 Crashing
suradtaylor 02-11-2006, 01:43 AM Recently if I try to delete a particle layer, the program shows an error message and then closes. Sometimes it just shows this error message randomly and then the program crashes. I have reinstalled and upgraded to v4.0.2. I still get thesame behaviour.
Any suggestions pls.
Thanks

Are you hitting "Ctrl-Z" I've found in specific situations where I apply a partical layer then hit undo it'll crash.

Hi Guys,
i also experienced crashes many times, with particles or without. I am running
this verson on XP and this is something why few people consider C4 as a professional
app, because it easily crashes all the time. And even you have a Dual Proc machine,
the speed still remains slow with particles....

My C4 crashes all the time. To my dismay I didn't realize this until I was under a time crunch and my client was literally over my shoulder directing changes to the comp. I would say C4 went down every 15 minutes or so. My client was none too impressed. I don't recall C3 being this unstable. My rig is as follows:
Dell Precision 640
Duel Xeons (3.6)
4 Gigs Ram
Win XP64
NVIDIA Quadro 3450
178 GB Raid 0 (2X 15K SCSI Drives)
I have to say things run great when they run. Particles are fast, jpeg sequences cache at almost real-time speeds. I'm happy with C4 aside from the crashes, which seem to happen at any time no matter what I am doing. I don't see Autodesk addressing this. Has anyone found ways to tweak their setup and make things more stable?
P.S. I have found network rendering with C4 to be just as unstable. Nodes go down with for seamingly no reason often causing there to be missing frames in my final comp. What up?

Try deleting your host.ini file. It can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\combustion4\ . This is a configuration file that controls alot of combustion features. It may have been corrupted by one of your crashes. Whenever combustion becomes really unstable always try removing the host.ini and/or the paint.ini.
Hope this helps,
-Eric
