Its really frustrating when you can't save your preferences.. Everything I star maya i have to set up my preferences.. For some reason it won't save them.. and this is the error that I get in Script Editor:

file -f -new;
select -cl;
// Result: ./untitled //
saveShelf Mine "D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Mine";
// Error: Can't open the file: D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Mine //
saveShelf Shelf1 "D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Shelf1";
// Error: Can't open the file: D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Shelf1 //
saveShelf Shelf2 "D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Shelf2";
// Error: Can't open the file: D://maya/4.0/prefs/shelves/shelf_Shelf2 //
// Warning: Save of "D://maya/4.0/prefs/userPrefs.mel" failed //
// Warning: Save of "D://maya/4.0/prefs/windowPrefs.mel" failed //
// Saving runtime commands to : D://maya/4.0/prefs/userRunTimeCommands.mel
// Warning: Save of "D://maya/4.0/prefs/userHotkeys.mel" failed //
// Warning: Save of "D://maya/4.0/prefs/userNamedCommands.mel" failed //
// Warning: Not all preferences were saved. See Script Editor for details. //

What can I do??? I just reinstalled maya thinking that that would fix the problem... but no luck...

Its really anoying to have to set my preferences every time i start up maya, any help would be greatly apreciated..

THANK YOU, in advance....

that looks really strange to me.

usually maya saves the prefs in a folder under c:\documents and settings\<username>\my files\maya\....
(or something similar.. having german windows here)

saving them in the directory it tries for you makes no real sense, since another login or user would override your settings..

so i think there is something more wrong with your settings on your machine meaning the windows environment variables...

try doing the following:
create a new user on your machine and install maya (after uninstalling it first) there. (you could even test before if the new user helps without uninstalling)

good luck

1. Is your harddisk full?
2. Is Your Document-Folder write-protected?
3. Try to move those files into another directory? Normally Maya should recreate those files with the "standard"-settings.

Really strange, why canīt maya READ or OPEN his own files

The reason it saves in D:\ drive is because thats where i've set my documents folder to be referenced from...

I've tried deleting the maya folder, when i run maya it creates all the default files and preferences again, but i can't change them..??!?!

This is also a problem with my Shelfs...

THE THINGS I CHECKED

- that folder is not write protected, the system and all users have read and write rights.
- the harddisk is definetly not full, i still have 10GB on that harddrive.

This is really frostrating, coz i set up my shelf for poligon moddeling..
then the next time i start maya, i have to do it all over again..

i know what that is .... go in your c:\documents and settings\username\maya\maya4\prefs

right-click over the icons ... go to propriety and remove the read only check mark ...

it should work i had the same problem once

ROBIN>> I thought that is the problem..

and i do remove the check mark.. and its stil there.. but its not the full check.. the box is kinda grayed out..

but the rest of my drive is like that too.. and every other application works fine..??!?!??!

The grey-checked "write-only" could be, because the folder in where it is is "read-only" check that, if itīs also grey-checked look if the upper folder is "read-only" and so on.

When i uncheck the read only box, and press apply or ok its still there.. ?!??!

i dont have an idea of why this box is grayed out.. but as far as i remember it was like that since the last time i formated... which wasn't too long ago.. and i dont wanna format again unless its gonna fix that problem.. haha.. you format then you find yourself installing little things for the next 2 weeks.. haha..

anyways... if someone could please help me stop this little anoyance.. i was thinking on seting up the preferences that i want on someone elses computer then coping over the files to mine..

thats not a solution though...

thanks for listening....

anybody have a real resolution to this issue other than changing 'my documents' back to the root directory?

figured it out: http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/support/maya/knowledgebase/bp/systems/1899.jsp (http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/support/maya/knowledgebase/bp/systems/1899.jsp)
