ok this might seem kinda dumb and it might be pointless...I've done reseach on this and there are so many different parts I don't really know what I'm looking at or what would work with each other.

but I was wondering if someone could list the parts of a computer they would but if they were going to build a computer. I don't mean..."I would but a case, some memory, and a graphic card." I mean like actual specs of each part. The reason I ask this is..I'm afriad I would order parts...and some of the parts might not be compatiable with each other. I also want to try to have a flawless build..and I do have friends that could help me build it if they need too...sadly they could care less with helping me find parts...which is why I'm asking on here.

If you could...please provide a link to each part..I would most likely buy from either www.Tigerdirect.com or www.Newegg.com

I need a computer that can obviously do 3d graphics..and it would be nice to use as a gaming machine too. I don't want some top of the notch machine and I don't want to pay $2,000 for the parts. I know I can get a farily good machine for under $1,299.

Thanks to whoever replies...and soory for the long post.

amd x2 4200+ $360 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103547
Asus A8n SLI premium $170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131540
2GB ddr400 pc3200 184-pin RAM $185 http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/add/6077/OWC3200DDR2GBP/ It's the same as crucial memory but it's much much cheaper, try to ignore the fact that it's geared toward apple, it's the exact same RAM.
evga geforce 7800 256MB $315 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130249
300GB diamondmax SATA hard drive $125: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144421
total cost without case and PSU: $1155 before tax and shipping if applicable
and this is a pretty kick-ass machine.

You can always add another 2 gigs of memory for another $185, as well as another graphics card because it's an SLI motherboard.

or: http://www.apple.com/imac/ comes with nice display, starts at $1299
:-D

Do some research on your own then ask us about the specs.? It's part of the learning process.

There's probably a few threads about this on the next few pages.

holy shit..thank you sooo much max.

sweet: yeah your right...I was thinking how I should go about doing it...I having gone through and tried choosing what parts to get many times...but then I'm just like yeah right I don't know what I'm talking about.

EDIT: Do you think a 450w PSU would be enough?

should be enough, I'm not well versed on PSU's or cases but there's nothing too intense going on there. You'd need to think about a bigger power supply if you were using a big quadro card in sli and like four hard drives, but 450W should be fine for this setup.

Regards PSU, it probably would be enough, but personally I would shell out a bit more for the PSU and not skimp. It's an important bit of kit, that will not only help with the stability of your machine, but give you the option to upgrade later.

Don't give up unless you've tried (ie. asking us 'bout the parts you've chosen).

And yes a 450 W PSU from a reputable company would suffice for the specs. andrew posted.
