There was a thread here that's long since been closed, but I recently found it and need some more detailed explanations, if possible. I've always had problems moving .obj files in and out of my mac version of Maya  and have heard a lot of complaints about this even from Form-Z users wishing to get their models inside of Maya. Apparently, it's a problem with how the actual text is constructed in the .obj file. Can anyone show an example of how to fix an .obj and .mtl file. PLEASE HELP

Solution from first Posting:

Well I dfinallt figured it out with the help of an expert from okino graphics (the makers of polytrans.) Basically, the maya bug will not read mac format objs so you have to open it in a text editor like bbedit and save it with unix style line breaks. (Make sure to do it to your mtl file as well.) After that, everything imports beautifully!

Open the Terminal Application on your computer. A window will show up upon opening. Type 'tounix' (without the quote marks) and then hit the space bar.

Drag the obj file that you want to open in Maya into the document window. The documents' path will appear. Press Return. You will then see a prompt, waiting for input.

Type 'tounix' (without the quote marks) and hit the space bar.

Drag the mtl file that you want to open in Maya into the document window. The mtl documents' path will appear. Press Return.

Quit Terminal.

Open the converted obj file in Maya using the File>Import command. The shaders in the mtl document will now appear in the Hypershade panel.

I noticed that in v7 now you now have to go use the Show Contents command for the Maya app file to get at the tounix command. In earlier versions of Maya, notably v6, you were able to use the above directions without modification.
