View Full Version : From Maya to Smoke - any takers?

I am using Smoke and am trying to get some 3D work from Maya into my DVE. I'm trying to load it as a geometry and while Smoke will see the FBX, it won't import it (comes up with generic import error).

Does anyone know if there is some secret Maya or Smoke setting to make this work? I've contacted autodesk but they suggested it might be that we are running Maya 7 and Smoke doesn't recognise the newest FBX file...

I've heard using 3DMAX is more compatible for this work, but it's not an option for us at the moment.

Any suggestions most welcome.

If it's just geometry I'd use OBJ. That works much better when importing into FFI/SF systems. You can also use 3ds which allows said systems to import uv coordinates...

cheers for the reply Kai01/W.

is OBJ specific to 3DMAX or Maya?

Obj is an alias file format integrated into Maya. But Max has pretty good importers/exporters.

If you don't have animation on any objects, then the maya fbx exporter doesn't write the file correctly. Just select all the stuff in your scene and put a keyframe on the T,R,S(translate rotate scale).

I ran into this when I was moving stuff from maya to inferno.

if smoke won't even load your FBX and just throws an error, then i guess your problem is that maya uses a newer version of FBX than smoke. FBX version compatibility has been a major pain for me at times, too.
in that case you should check with autodesk and uh... autodesk ;) support to find out if it's possible to downgrade the maya exporter or upgrade the smoke importer.

but, i'd recommend OBJ if you don't need to transfer animations but still objects. and in my limited experience with max/maya->flame 9.x workflows, it has never been a problem to transfer UV coordinates this way as well. with the 3ds fileformat, it seems possible to store the texture itself within the file.
