CgTalk:FXWars! THE OCEAN
SIMULATION WAR
by BEN BOLIN

Ocean (from Okeanos (http://forums.cgsociety.org/wiki/Oceanus), Greek for river, the ancient Greeks noticed that a strong current flowed off Gibraltar, and assumed it was a great river); covers almost three quarters (71%) of the surface of the Earth (http://forums.cgsociety.org/wiki/Earth), and nearly half of the world's marine waters are over 3000 m deep.

THE CHALLENGE:

Create a REALISTIC OCEAN SIMULATION. You will simulate either the a BEACH SHORE, OPEN OCEAN or A SHIP at sea.

The key of the challenge this time is to do realistic images your shots. This means that in the finished animation you have to have simulation, cinematography and lighting that looks EXACTLY like the photographic images you would see from a National Geographic/ Discovery Channel.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/th_mar.jpg (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/mar.jpg)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/th_3.jpg (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/3.jpg)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/th_2.jpg (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/robertoortiz1/cgtalk/2.jpg)

There will be three types of categories :

THE BEACH (Waves gently rolling on a beach.)
THE OPEN OCEAN (Ocean Waves )
THE SHIP (A ship moving up an down in the ocean.)

Extra bonus if you can simulate storm weather on any of the three categories. You may add live action people walking / swimming in the virtual ocean, or in the deck), but the key is the simulation.
THE BEACH (Difficulty Level MED)
Imagine you are in the Caribbean walking down a sandy beach

More emphasis on realistic environment VFX interaction with enviroment.
More emphasis on lighting and cinematography.
The scenes in the entry require good simulation and lighting.
We should see things like wet sand (maybe some folliage affected by the wind) , caustics and rolling waves.
OPEN OCEAN ( Difficulty Level MED)
Imagine you are in a chopper doing a beauty shot of huge was in the ocean

More emphasis on shot creation and realistic lighting VFX interaction
More emphasis on cinematography and rock solid simulation.
THE SHIP: (Difficulty Level VERY HIGH)

Imagine you are in a chopper doing a beauty shot of a ship in open ocean

More emphasis on shot creation and realistic lighting VFX interaction
More emphasis on editing, lighting and cinematography.
The scenes in the entry require good simulation and interaction.
We should see things like ship wakes and waves
Hybrid Entry: (Difficulty Level VERY HIGH)
Imagine you are in a chopper doing a beauty shot of a ship in open ocean that ends in a beach shot. This type of entry
is perfect for a storyline.

More emphasis on shot editing and shot lighting.
More emphasis on editing, lighting and cinematography.
The scenes in the entry require good simulation and interaction.
The best animation/short will be selected by an open vote
for these categories (AND I DO PROMISE we will use them :) ):

Best Cinematography
Most Realistic entry
Best Modeling
Best Simulation
Best Editing(NEW!)
Best Visual Effects (NEW!)
Best Overall Entry
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

Cool challenge Roberto! The subject is pretty challenging, and very well thought! :) But the point that it's more about the TD aspects and less about the VFX/mattepainting/live-action/rotoscoping/compositing stuff makes it less appealing to me. At least: I won't enter with a whole team, but maybe if I got some time, I'll try to get something nice together. At least it would be a nice Reactor-exercise! ;)

Further: that spotlight with Wim Coene is really cool! I'm glad to see that those winners get honored (again) with such a brilliantly cool spotlight! :)

Good luck to all entrants! :)

You know you could make it into a composite challenge very easy. Just composite someone on a rolling beach in a realistc fashion. I am sure you can do it.

Don't think I'll have tie for this, but isn't waves on a beach harder than a rolling ocean? Fluids interacting with objects is difficult.

isn't waves on a beach harder than a rolling ocean?I'd say so, too, yes. :) Also because when waves break, geometry physically disappears.

Roberto, why exactly does the first post of this thread contain the text "CgTalk:FXWars! THE OCEAN

by BEN BOLIN"
did I suggest this at some point? I don't mind getting credit, but I don't remember suggesting this topic. It's a good one though.

I think I might try to participate in this one too. I'm a newbie in those things and recently I've done one ocean storm in Lightwave. I don't know if it qualifies for the FXWars or not, I just like to hear some opinions from professionals. I only have to convert it to QuickTime, because I've rendered in *.tga format and then merged it in *.avi, so as soon as I convert it I'm gonna post it in here.
