You could make a shape from 4 circles, loft it around another circle, and then use the twist deformer in the loft controls.

2nd, or too slow. took some time to find the the right axis ...

I recreated the loft path from the top view, lofted and twisted and it came out right :)

Don't overlook loft for tasks like this. It might be ancient but it's still very handy I use it for things like this quite often.

One thing you get for free with loft is mapping coordinates. An object like that would be a nightmare to map any other way. I don't think you'd get uvs with Silo's approach.

Holy smokes! You're right about the UV's - man, LOFT is far more powerful than I imagined!!

I used lofting for a big civil engineering project (highway 3d vis).
Basically its the only way to make a road look realistic and be able to use a tiled texture..

Just make sure you hit - Real World Size Mapping.. In the loft options I think.

Other good thing is its nurbs output.

and btw.. wouldnt say its ancient.. more like underappreciated :P

Hope this Helps
