well i ve been fiddlin around on how to put up this thread...cause i have alot of stuff to tell here..but..how to keep it compace thats the main issue..im not real good at pdfing stuff..ah.well anyways here goes

character design, what is it that defines a good design from a bad one and also what is it that defines a good designer froma a bad one.
a good design is not something that looks cool ,often artists go berserk when designing making characters into some sort of an ego parade of skill display but while doing that often forgetting the essential rules that make a character look beleavable in its enviroment

what are those rules
1 enviroment- in order to make a beleavable character one must allways be aware of its natural surroundings. enviroment is crucial in defining the second step
2. natural evolution. yes i know it sounds pretentious and very high brow but its actually rather simple in order to sufrvive in the enviroment character must have ways to overcome its obstacles, whether by using his personal body skills or accesories..these skills, physical atributes and accesories give a great variety of choices to a skilled artist to make a beleavable character fit into the world
3 history and evocative elements-in order to make the next step u must be aware that that character sort of existed before you drew it, characteristics of nationality, special features to define hima -her-it as a member of a certain group with its tradition meaningful elements instead of overpumping it with every imaginable peace of c... it could pick up on the road
4 anathomy... yes..lemme say that again...anaathomyy... u trembling allready?? well that aint all..anathomy af many species..now trembling?..did i mention bugs?? ah well

so to get things started ill post some light warmup stuff more comin soon

Awesome, can't wait man, the rules make sense to me...
But... when designing an E.T, you don't really have to think about the common anatomy of creutures on earth, right?
You may desing your own, as long as it would actually work?
Can't wait!

nebez! Very precious comic work flow! (Seems like self-explored knowledge more than sourcing from others masters.. )

this part is really hard to teach. Ppl who draw comic usually gotta haf own unique mindset.

I like the Wildboar & the Snake Hulk character design! Really unique & powerful outlook.

Btw, i wonder where u study ur art? R u a self-taught artist... U seems to get along many type of Art form!

Yeah.b4 i forgot.. DId u manage to get ur 1GB ram yet?!

Nice starting stage... Put ur 3D aside first..hehe~!!

nebezial
02-12-2006, 06:39 PM
thanx everyone plenty more comin
dinodog_Jr you guessed right, im self taught , here in croatia the art programs are seriously directioned towards abstract so all i could do is work hard and learn it myself.. i guess its all in the mind i set before me some impossible tasks and incredible rivals to catch..and with time i got better
but the reall stuff i guess really comes from thinking alot..lookin at the big picture..that helped me develop my own sort of a theorethical approach in wwhich one doesnt just create a character but through it confirms the existance of a world.
aboiut the realism in the work..it was greatly influencetd with fiddling round 3d ..basically while looking for that perfect render u kinda start seeing the elements you are looking for and once u realise that the rest is kinda automatic
oh and i did get me a gb of ram woohoo:beer:

Omfg~! U r absolutely one young sample for tos who always think of entering art college is the only way to persue professional art skills.

Nebez.. r u goin to form a website?.. I will be ur TOp 3 visitors! haha..

Cool to knw u finally got ur 1GB RAM.. It did speed up alot!
Time to go for Duo-core processor since u r working on 2D & 3D..hehe

lucky u didn't start tos Abstract art here. But still wonder R u indulge in Abstract art oso?!

Ok..let's get back to Nebez Comic tutorial gallery!~

Hello!
Nice tips! thanks for that.
Butm what I want to know is, how are the examples drawd? by a "real" brush, or by a "virtual" brush?

And, if it's real, (and that's what I guess) , how are they called and where can I buy them? ;)

Did you use a graphic-tablet or have you drawed it all by mouse?

thanks

here in croatia the art programs are seriously directioned towards abstract so all i could do is work hard and learn it myself.. i guess its all in the mind i set before me some impossible tasks and incredible rivals to catch

Same here man. One day I would like to paint like Dell'otto and draw as good as Jim lee.... I'm pertty sure I will get there in the next 50 years :D.

I'm at the university of Lethbridge and I am being taught art by philosophers. Its so harsh. They lack talent, cant make it in the realworld then end up at a university teaching what they dont know. Go figure. I am seriously jaded.

I would like to start with how amazed I am by your work and insight. Now- a small critique. Your thread should be titled “Character Design for Games/Sci-Fi…etc”. The rules you laid down missed one huge and important rule: who is the audience of the piece? Mickey Mouse doesn’t look the way he does because it was the only way he could survive in the harsh Disney environment- he looks that way because it is appealing to children. I envy your work, and your rules have application in some genres, but good character design is an extremely broad topic.:)

genius!

im trying to come up with a new character myself... down on inspiration lately!
out of curiosity, and the need of a creative boost...

what's your idea of a "fierce - bad a$$ - yet cool - smooth" looking type of creature/beast/character???? perferably a biped...

someone who could be mistaken for a villain, but at the same time could be a good guy...

kinda like batman... dark... fierce... yet cool... calm... smooOoOoOooOooth...

okey im asking too much...

but if you have the time...

thanks in advance! :wavey:

Yeah that's what I thought too,... but thinking about it isn't mickey an ambassador to a world that is stretchy, funny, with simple shapes and colours, a world that appeals to children? In a way he would be a product of that world. While in reality it was probably the other way around, the environment and character fit perfectly. Seems logical but a handy thing to keep in mind when comming up with a figure starting from scratch.

@nebezial, well done, good solid artwork with a purpose.

I agree with most everyone here that the tutorials are very well written and your skills are quite adept, but I see a few things missing from your instruction which will end up being a pain point for people learning from your style.

You have stated how important anatomical correctness of the face is. I think you are absolutely correct, but I feel that there is a slight shortcoming in your enforcement of proportional correctness and functional existance within the remainder of the body.

Your instructions are of course meant as a general outline for the materials presented and not intended as one on one instruction, and after reviewing your tutorials up until now I fully believe that you may cover these necessary facts as the material you are developing progresses.

I also have reviewed several of your pieces of work and have been very impressed at your level of ability. I can't wait to see if you present information on how you develop your environments for your characters...while most of your environments are secondary to the character, the image composition as a whole exists well and provides believability.

Thanks for your hard work and willingness to share,
Benjamin

whoa thanx everyone, glad u find it usefull, more comin
thewave yeah i know what u mean by proportions, but i have learned that sometimes the most obvious way to point at sumthin is to slightly stylise it but its a point well taken, but i kinda rely on rebecca and a few others to properly teach anatomy..they know their stuff. mine..is all a product of my thoughts and alot of observation.so if i was to try and go teachin anatomy...it would end in chaos lol:beer:

Wow, dude, this thread has just renewed my faith in drawing comical characters (I have always leaned more towards realism), especially with the head drawing which shows the flaws in my design is something extremely helpful.

Maybe you can help me with this, but I have been struggling in the design of a child. Mainly for things like faces and bodies. Do you have some advice for something like that?

Thanks. Looking forward to more of your tutorial.

Nebezial thank you so much for this! I have been searching for so long for good tutorials like this....and the tutorial of my dreams is right here on the cgtalk front page...who would of guessed :p

I dont know if you were planning on doing more on comic characters, but I am really wanting to get a better grasp on comic drawing. So could you do more on them? please :D

Thanks so much for putting this together!! ;)

I understand completely what you mean when you say you are leaving the anatomy instruction to Rebecca...she is very talented and having Burne Hogarth and other masters as instructors or inspiration just makes her stronger.

You observation is very keen.

I look forward to you presenting more information on the way you develop art.

Thanks,
Benjamin

Great thread!!! Thank you Nebezial for doing this, you are great! :)

This is a character design I,ve done a couple of months earlier, it's actually my second one. C&C are welcome:)

CONCEPT BEHIND THE CREATURE(I'm not sure if I translated the story correctly;however, in Bulgarian it sounds good :) )

In the early years, before life existed, the Earth was peaceful and quiet. The secret experiments, whose goal was the creation of an artificial intellect, resulted in the creation of the First – a robot, who proved that he was not only an intelligent machine but also an intelligent creature with soul. The breakthrough of the new technical revolution resulted in a quick spread of the C/Fe* concepts; they turned into a new culture, and, at the end, humans and robots became equal. The break out of a war was a matter of time, a war which led to the downfall of both earth dominants. Before the complete disappearance of the robots, however, they created an organic form of life, which would take their place. This was their goal since the time of the First. ( Truth №1 from the synthesis of the Prophets:”…and will come the day, when we shall throw off our metal shells, and we shall live in flesh and bones, perfect…” ). That is how the Animus (animus**), The Perfect ones were created. Animus – „ a spirit of revenge”, a creature genetically gifted with exceptional intelligence, strength and adaptation skills. He quickly became the conqueror of the Earth. It did not take him long to conquer the neighboring planets. They were an unstoppable force spread in the whole cosmos. The few survivors of the human race were fighting tenaciously for their survival, but little by little their resistance subdued. Due to the endless battles against the Perfect, thick clouds of dust covered the sun and the remands of the planet Earth became a hostile place for every living thing…..
„The Seventh Wave” was the most ferocious, as we know from the great books of wars, but it created a hero – Kalakar – The Tamer. He managed to tame one of the perfect. Together they made a lot of exploits. Later they participated in the wars for freedom, where they found their deaths. Their death made people realize, that in fact they are the true creatures of the planet Earth. And the planet led them into a final battle for life. She ward of the Animus. The planet Earth was wounded, but free … alone in the all universe.
1. Environment (the surrounding world): the Earth after the destructive wars. Thick shield of poisonous gases and dust had surrounded the Earth. It did not let the sun rays in, and most of the plants and animals vanished. Almost all of the water basins were damaged. The shaken ecosystem and the huge cataclysms turned the planet into a dark place, covered with bare rocks, dust, and gases.
2. Characteristics and adjustments to the living environment. The Animus is gifted with exceptional intelligence and insidiousness. This, in combination with their hard Hit tine cover, horn-like formation, regenerated abilities and their unusually quick adjustment to different life conditions. They were able to survive at places where life was almost impossible. Their structure and the way they moved were created after long-lasting researches. To achieve this, the robots studied the most successful forms of life on the planet.
3. Personality: The Kalakar’s Animus is an example that every rule has its exceptions. To tame a Perfect is practically impossible because their hatred toward humans and everything alive is genetically registered. This turned them into the last revenge of the robots (they created a life to take lives). There are many scientific studies trying to unbridle the reasons why the Kalakar’s Animus became attached to a human, but one thing is known for certain – this whim of nature will never be unraveled. Attachment is a weak word when we speak of a tamed perfect who confronted his entire race to protect a human.
• C/Fe culture: the name came from C – the chemical symbol for Carbon – the basis of everything living; Fe-iron, the building material of the robots. A term used from the contemporary science fiction writers when they depict the mutual life of humans and robots.
• ** Animus : The Latin word Animus means „spirit; soul”. The same word in English means „animosity”. The name combines in itself the main purpose of robots – to create their „spirited” heirs of flesh and bones and „animosity” – a possibility for them to revenge to the human race.

I hope you like it :) Cheers!

Inspiring!

Bird-man evolved on a distant planet. On this planet insects evolved into something similar to reptiles, but they have six legs. As on earth reptiles evolved into birds, the forlimbs became wings, on this planet the forlimbs became wings. This left them with two arms, two legs, and two wings. In time the environment disabled the use of wings. No longer being able to fly, he needed to defend himself, thus he used his wings as weapons. In time the wings evolved into battering-long-arms. The tips are made of hard bone.

He evoloved into a humaniod, because the humaniod form is the natural form intelligent life forms evolve into. On his planet he is now a super-hero dressed in a suit that is sprayed on the skin. It protects his skin.

This thread inspired me, so I came up with bird-man. I did a quick sketch then quickly painted in shapes in painter, artistist oils.
