FormZ 5.1

Alright, I'm trying to figure out how I can improve my system's viewport performance when working with huge files. When I select a lot of geometry it takes my cpu usage up to 50% (damn GUI non-SMP!) and takes a few seconds to regen which is really frustrating. My question is: Are my processors limiting this viewport regeneration or is it strictly my Quadro 3400 that's slowing things down. I know there is some kind of magic (please enter precise techinical description here) that happens between the cpu and gpu that takes task mgr to 50% but I don't understand exaclty which end (CPU or GPU) is responsible for the bottleneck!

I'm seriously considering upgrading to Opteron 254's (2.8ghz) in a few weeks or I may be able to swing an FX4500 upgrade... but not both : ( If SLI was "real" I'd go that way, but am not conviced that spending another 1k on a graphics card is worth 5% performance increase. I'm building a small renderfarm so I'm thinking of skipping the dual-core Opterons in my workstation due to the fact that I use Autocad and Illustrator quite frequently, which - like Max and FormZ's GUI are not smp enabled and can use the higher clock of the 254's.

?What to do - quadro4500 or Opteron 254's?
