Hi!

I'm trying to create a ghost shader or x-ray shader like the one in Maya for MentalRay(Maya). I not getting the desired output. The inner regions of the object to transparent and the outer opaque. It would be great if someone can give some tips on this. If there is a link also please provide it.

Thanks is advance.

how r u man, hope everything is going on fine. i was expecting ur mail. here's the ghost shader using MR shaders, pretty straight forward like maya's method. if u r looking for anything else, get in touch with me. say hi everyone...

BTW the attached file is not a zip file, its a .mb file....

Thanks dude!... i tried but there is one problem, if you apply it on a chr. the ramp in the shader acts fine with the rest of ther region, except for the inner mouth which is also seen thro the face. How do we avoid it? I'm trying to figure it out using sampler info.. but still trying.. if you have some options please let me know.

apply a painted texture to the ramp, ie. imagine white is showing the edge n black is tranparent, map a file texture(black n white alpha map) which dosen't make d mouth area transparent. create another color in ramp n map to it. u can give unevenness in d texture to make it non procedural...........

E'lan, the innermouth i gave was an example. We can apply complete transparency to the faces of the innermouth and slightly blend it at the edges using a ramp or paint it.But, C the main problem would be in shots where the hand region is seen through the body. I think it would look little odd, what's your opinion on that.

Hey guys,

Put it simple, We don't wanna see double sided(through n through), we need something like the way in the movie Casper....

BTW hey Vimal howz u man?

Do me one favour, Pls send me a screenshot of Billboard(sprite) using surface shader!

How r u? here's the sprite shader, i've mapped the shaders through bump combiner to have bump as an option, otherwise u can omit it. do not forget to increse the ray depth in the light and trace depth in the globals...take care..bye

Karur and Dindugal.....hi from madurai.

elan...Is there any way we can render only the faces that are faing the camera and i want the hidden faces not seen in the render output.

Why i am asking this is because even if u use double sided off, it is still going to give me problems when a hand or tail goes or comes in front of the body.I want to avoid the see through effect within the same mesh (like seeing the body through the trans in the hand)while retaining the see through effect for different objects.

how r u doing. first of all i would say that - logically seeing the body through the hand's trans is not wrong at all, i'll assume that u want that kinda style where u can see the other object through trans but not the same object itself(body parts), in that case, i think we can render all characters in different layers but with reflection 1 in globals, that makes alpha solid and centre part dark, then u can make an alpha pass with facing ratio and layer the characters in post with that alpha according to your needs, jus try it, i did a very simple test without compositing, may be u can try, i dont have shake in my machine. try n tell me, it might work(though i'm not sure becuz i;ve not tested)...all d best

hi guys!

E'lan - I came to know about this shader called raytype from Jozvex (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=3127) in another thread check this link and let me know your views. I find this shader very interesting..

Rajmax - I also got a preset called special opacity. have you used this. I'm providing the link..since i dont know how to try it in XSI, you please let me know how it works.

Hey guys! :buttrock:

The ghost shader is working in maya only. Thanks to Vladimir Jankijevic for doing it in XSI. I got the shader called dl3d_xraytexture by David Lanier from Highend3d. For avoiding the inner transparent faces.
1. Connect this texture to the front of a mib_two_sided shader in Maya MR.
2. To the back connect a mib_transparency.
3. Now assign this to any shading group in maya.
4. Now assign the shader to the object you want to render.

It works and its pretty simple. Please do check and lets discuss if there is any other problem in it. :bounce:

But i'm just facing a problem with shadow, coz' the shadow is opaque. Any suggestions.
