View Full Version : Low End Quadro or High End Gamer Card?
chindian 02-09-2006, 08:23 AM Hey all...
I am looking to build a new station for my 3d stuff - I work mainly in Maya... Although I may be starting XSI in the future.
Here's my dilema - I want to eventually run a dual video card SLI configuration on the new system and I was wondering if for the purposes of modelling and rendering - which would work better... A low end Quadro like the QuadroFX 540 or a gamer card like the 7800GT?
I noticed the numbers/specs on the 7800card is higher - (Eg. 256MB RAM opposed to 128 on the Quad.) - however - since the Quadro is a workstation card - I was wondering if it would have any advantage over the gamer card in Maya. Especially in terms of rendering real time previews of textures...
Also - how big of an increase is it gonna be if i do get the dual SLI set up? And must the 2 cards be exactly identical?
Here are the rest of specs for the computer I'll be building...
AMD X2 Dual Core 4200... 2GB RAM... 160GB HD... ASUS Motherboard - still havent decided exactly which one yet.... 550W PS.
Your help in this regards is greatly appreciated!!!
(Also are those rumors about the price cut in the Opterons for FEB true? Cuz if so - i might just get an Opteron instead of the X2... are they that much better a processor than the X2s though?)
Thanks a butt load!

I'd go for high end gamer card.
It would most likely have higher gpu engine and latest tech specs.
As for your rig, sound fine, but as mentioned in similar thread wait till early March, in case price drop.
For SLI to work, both cards MUST be the same model. They dont have to be from the same vendor, but it improves the chances of it working well if they are.

550 Watt PSU is total overkill in my opinion, if you get a decently made PSU, even with 3 HDs and overclocked CPU you'd be in the ballpark of a 430W CPU.

Opte's are the same architecturally as the X2's but they use better build components and undergo more testing. They're great for overcloaking, people push them to 2.5 -2.9 GHz on air.

Ah yes the 550W ps may be over kill - but i already have it u see... I got it for $35.... so when i saw the price I snatched it up as it was a steal of a deal... i've tested it and it works great!!! I love it!
With regards to the processors - I dont intend on doing overclocking - so i think i might end up going with the x2 if they are cheaper - especially if they are the exact architecture...
Thanks!!

Do yall all agree on the gamer card then? I heard someone say that while the Quads arent better at games - they blaze in Maya and XSi and other such apps.... That's what's really important to me - so which would be the better performer?

I bought a new OEM Quadro FX 3000 for under 400 on ebay, and it works perfectly.. Although, I'm not sure if they have an equivelant PCI-E Quadro for the same price...keep your eyes open.. Maya runs flawlessly on the card...

I have oredered a new system for work. I use mainly Maya and Max. Alias have specs on cards recommended for use with Maya, so it is worth checking out. Ive got a AMD dual core with 2 gigs of ram and a Nvidea Quadro FX 540. From all the tech advice we have got over the last few days seems to point in this being a machine that rock. Here is a great tech review on AMD Dual Cores. Worth the read. Hope this helped. If 3d rendering is what you are doing then a good processor and a good amount of ram is what you need. Alias recommend all of Nvideas Quadro FX cards , but not the gaming ones. Good luck bud. http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2005q2/opteron-x75/index.x?pg=1

I don't think 550 Watt is complete overkill. For an office or average 3d machine yes but not for a kick ass 3d workstation with 5+ HDs, few PCI cards, 4-8GB of RAM, 4-5 fans, maybe 2 graphic cards (in SLI or non-SLI mode)...etc etc
I personally would go for a high quality high wattage PSU. Using your excellent link my future PC comes to 600watt+ :) I guess it all depends on the budget and how powerful the system is.
Good read- http://www.pcpowercooling.com/technology/myths/
Excellent PSU for "powerful" 3d workstations -

You could also buy 500watt ones from them and they will perform better than 600watt ones from some of the other average PSU makers.
Anyway my 2p worth of advice :)
