Hi all,

I am working on a tutorial in the Mastering Maya 3 book by Sybex. If anyone actually has this I'm on page 808.

The tutorial seems easy enough.
Create a plane and rotate 90 z axis
Create a directional emitter with speed of 10, spread .2
Make the plane an Active Rigid Body (select plane and go to "Soft/Rigid Bodies -->Create Active Rigid Body" it says)

It says playback to see what hapens. Here is the fun part:

The plane starts revolving, and I don't see any particles. ???
I also get this warning:
Warning: Cycle on 'nurbsPlane1.worldMatrix[0]' may not evaluate as expected. (Use 'cycleCheck -e off' to disable this warning.)

I also had trouble with another tutorial (same error message) that floated upwards just because I told the particles to.

Thanks to anyone that can help me. Oh yeah, I'm using Maya 4.0

first of all : why "active" body ??

so the rotation could come either from initial rotation settings on the active body (the plane) or you have created a field or something like.

why you don't see the particles !!

could be that you turned off dynamics-view from your viewport. in your viewport check the show menu and make sure dynamics are on. or maya didn't create the particles for you, just the emitter (but in general this is not possible). look in the outliner for the particleshape.

Do the particle and the plane intersect at frame 0 ?

Open the script editor before pressing the playback-key,
does it tell you more about the error ?

Hi,

I don't know why active body, it's just what the book says to do.
I'll check the rotation settings, but I defnitely didn't see particles, and I'll look for a particle shape.

I am going to start from scratch (no big deal was only a couple of steps at this point), so I don't know what the script editor said yet. I'll look though.

thanks very much

Here is the error message that happens when I make the plane an active rigid body:

rigidBody -active -m 1 -dp 0 -sf 0.2 -df 0.2 -b 0.6 -l 0 -tf 200 -iv 0 0 0 -iav 0 0 0 -c 0 -pc 0 -i 0 0 0 -imp 0 0 0 -si 0 0 0 -sio none ;
// Result: rigidSolver //
// Result: rigidBody1 //
// Warning: Cycle on 'nurbsPlane1.worldMatrix[0]' may not evaluate as expected. (Use 'cycleCheck -e off' to disable this warning.) //
// Press the ESC key to stop playback
currentTime 9.25 ;
// Warning: Cycle on 'nurbsPlane1.worldMatrix[0]' may not evaluate as expected. (Use 'cycleCheck -e off' to disable this warning.) //
