I am using Shag Hair (and it's impossible to find good online help) and was wondering if there is any way to 'bake' the hair or convert it to mesh so that when i move the head around, the hair doesn't have to be recalculated EVERY time.

I don't plan on using forces on the hair, so it would be smart to try.

Well, you CAN convert the hair to geometry, but you won't get aby benefit in terms of rendertime (quite the opposite in fact) due to the massive polycounts generated and the fact that geometry hair has to be anti-aiased by the renderer. If you want to try it the settings are near the bottom of the hair environment rollout in a section called "geometry".

There's no way to bake the environmental effect though.

So, that's a "no", basically.
