still sounds very homophobic - or stereotypical at least. Is "Rawhide Boy" the best double-entendres they could come up with?
how bout "Dances-with-sailors"?

Not to sound insensitive or like a bigot (I've know a few gay friends, and I'm totally fine with it.),
But that is by far the FUNNIEST thing I've seen all week! :scream: :D :scream:
What the hell are they thinking over there at marvel?!?

I'm sorry but they are trying too hard to make him "look" gay. I don't think homosexuality is something you can draw. Why does being gay have to play into the story anyways? I haven't seen too many stories where being strait is stressed like that. Sounds like a character with no substance to me. :thumbsdow

Why do I get the feeling that Bill Jemas was involved with this. Honestly if they are not really careful about the writing this is going to come off as one of the most insultingly stupid things to come out in years. Now that I think about it that is probably exactly what will happen.

Brian Reinert, Marvel's public relations officer, said that Marvel has always been "interested in tapping into stories that are relevant today." He expects the reactions to this comic to vary.
Although many readers will accept the new sexuality of the Marvel hero, Reinert expects possible negative responses from people who don't accept homosexuality and readers who do not want to see a change in their beloved character.
"When you tackle these issues it will always push buttons," he said.
WOW, that is ridiculous!!!!!! I can see they got the ultra hip middle aged accountants in on this one!!!!
Hey bob, what do YOU think the kids wanna see.
Hmmm phil, well, they are all gay now right?
Yeah bob, i think they are, but they prefer to be called homosexuals.
wow phil you are so in touch with todays youth.
I think this is a great issue we could touch on.
yah, and it would make a shitload of money too! Those homos will buy anything with a guy in purple and pink!
yeah, money IS really all that matters in life isnt it.
yeah, it really is.
ok, so make sure this is chock full of all the stereotypes it can have ok!!! OH WAIT!!!!! I just thought of a GREAT sidekick!! It can be a homophobic negro!! And Rawhide can secretly be in love with him!
yeah bob, thats great, the kids love negros too.
wow, we are really going to touch a lot of wallets.......err hearts with this one!
and the really scary part is.....behind all the niceties that these morons try to hide behind when talking to eachother im sure it went right along those lines only in other words.
Tackle these issues.....what the hell issues are they tackling???? When was the last time they had superman check out Lois Lanes tits?? sexual preference has NOTHING to do with superheroes!!!!! Yes they all have love lives.....but why cant the character just be gay, and not have that be an issue???
Why cant he just have a boyfriend and that be it.......why does he have to wear purple and pink and be as "gay looking" as possible????? Im sorry but a lot of gay people dont try and flaunt that fact all over the place, they are regular people just like everyone else.......god i hate ridiculous stereotypes!!!!
The day they started letting business men run Marvel and not the artists is the day is died........oh yeah, that was about the time that McFarllen started image wasnt it..... ;)

I know a LOT of gay men (Portland has loads). All my wifes male friends are gay or bi and I work with a whole bunch of gay men too. Many DO flaunt it unabashedly. In fact, they can go to great lenths to act very stereotypical. Try to have a normal conversation with them about anything and they always got to throw in their inuendos and what not. THEY LOVE IT! And, of course, I know a lot of gay men that you couldn't pick out from a 'straight' crowd....
Therefore, I think either portrayal is acceptable in a fictional story of a gay man. As for whether the comic will be good... that's a whole different matter. It doesn't look too promising to me but I won't completely dismiss without having read it. I generally don't like western revivals though.

I'm with gabe on this one, I know plenty of gay men who go to great lengths to 'camp it up' as we put it over here. Camp has been cool for a while (at least over here) and if it sells, it sells. There's nothing wrong with putting it out there. Actually I wonder if the writers are gay, it would be a little insulting if they were straight wouldn't it?

I'm with you bonecow, I just don't see what the point is. What comic character today has been defined by he or she being straight. Shame on them... :shame: tsk tsk tsk

"Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather" :applause:
Personally I think they're just trying to ressurect a dead character by making him 'interesting'. All things considered folks, this character ain't new and probably always looked that camp.
Relax.
Actually I wonder if the writers are gay, it would be a little insulting if they were straight wouldn't it?Does that mean I shouldn't write for characters who're completely straight? Sorry mate, but that's just a little patronising.

Yeah, exactly. It's like saying that because I'm a man I can never write about any female characters. Nonsense. I may not get it right everytime since I lack the personal experience of being female but it is fiction after all.
However, I can see how gay comic creators might be more interested than straight comic creators in making a gay character. I personally don't care at all if they're gay or straight. I care about whether it's a good read or not. It will probably suck (IMO) but then, most comics suck (again, IMO).
PS - Holy Shat!!! I'm a veteran now!!! How did that happen?!?

Really, I'm trying to keep an open-mind. Remember forlks. This is CNN doing the article not Marvel themselves. News organizations have a habbit of picking up on the racey parts of a story. So, There could be more to it. I think it would have been better to maybe let his sexuality unfold through every issue than say: "Here's a gay cowboy!" Just my opinion.
Why is it I hear Woody's (Toy Story) voice say: "Reach for the soap!!!"
Sorry! Had to say it!:D
sounds like a business thing... Marvel isn't always successfull with breaking out of it's usual comic style.
BTW: has anyone read the "Enigma" series by Milligan / Fegredo?
(that's a true masterpiece of a comic and it handles some aspects of homosexuality and superhero genre).
