Title: Donkeyskin
Name: Chris Beatrice
Country: United States
Software: Painter
This image is from the Grimm fairy tale of the same name. The young girl is fleeing a home that has turned into a place of terror for her. Into the dark night she goes, alone and afraid. I used the solitary lantern to accentuate the sense of isolation on the part of the girl (both symbolically, as a single light in the darkness, and physically to shine a "spotlight" on the girl, and light her face dramatically).
The image was created in Painter IX, using a smooth round brush with no transparency and lots of bleed.

I've always liked everything I've seen from you and this is no exception.
However, I wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have the main characters a little bit more close to the viewer? They seem a little bit far away right now.
You are so talented than whatever one can say will only be tiny nitpicks.

A wonderful painting. The lighting is remarkable. You've caught the girl's expression of grim determination mixed with apprehension and a little fear perfectly.

Man, you do it every time......looks fantastic. The pose/expression on the girl's face is just perfect. I love the way the little wagon sits on the twisty road and how the whole scene is self-contained in a little fairy kingdom (?!). Awesome. Great colour palette too.

Beautiful lighting! Reminds me of the strong warm-on-cools used by the Brothers Hildebrandt. (which is meant to be a big compliment, not an accusation of derivativeness, just so you know! :) ) Great work!

Your artwork is always so amazing, and this piece is no exception. It has the charm of a children's fairytale, yet the depth and beauty of quality art. Keep up the fantastic work as you're enriching the lives of everyone who sees your work.

Thank you all so, so much for your insightful remarks and support for my work.

There are always lots of ways to approach a composition, and your point certainly has some merit. I wanted to keep the figure small to emphasize the loneliness of her journey, to make her appear more vulerable, etc.
DuncanLong
Your post gives me a great deal of satisfaction because you have described exactly what I am striving for in my work. Of course, like any artist, I always feel as if I have barely achieved half of my intentions on a piece, but that'll have to do I guess.
