Hi there,

I've had a strange problem with mental ray while working on my scene, its not a major problem so i've ignored it mainly but was wondering if anyone had the answer.

When i open a fresh copy of maya, the first time i render my scene it goes through twice, all the progress information will come up, generating SSS map, rendering scene, 1% -> 100%, you can see the image coming up in blocks, but as soon as it gets to 100%, the render view goes blue again and it starts over. This only happens the first time i try and render, after that it works as normal, i click render, it gets to 100% and stops.

Its only on this file, so i assume its a setting somewhere that i've changed.

Any ideas guys?

Cheers
Hez

Yeah, mentalRay does that for me also. Annoying if the render takes 5-6 minutes... and it re-renders for no damn reason. :\

I've had this same problem with Maya PLE so I've gotten into the habit of hitting render, immediately cancelling it (command-period), then rendering again. It's a pretty lame workaround but it works.

It's a bug in Maya 7. It's really annoying.

yup! Same here...

It does it on mine only when I hit the render button from the main window. If I have render view opened somewhere it's ok.

Same issue here and it sucks in a major way.

Try open Render Globals before call render first time.

Well i thought it was just a problem i was having, obviously not :)

I swear it only started happening half-way through my mini-project, thats why i assumed it was a setting i'd changed somewhere.

Thanks for the various work-arounds guys.

Yeah it was happening to me too but for some reason it seems to have stopped doing it now! No idea why though.

On a completely seperate note, i was about to post a question in here about why my render times have just sky rocketed and mental ray keeps crashing, but i just found the answer.

I'd combined some objects of my character to tidy things up, but as they made a new object 'Feature Displacement' was now turned on, which i didn't realise, so maya was subdividing my gloves/trousers/boots six times, and then mental ray was doing it another 4 times. That added up to about 5 million polys instead of 30,000. I'm surprised it rendered at all, it was only after i tried to re-render that it would crash out.

Anywho, completely useless information but it was driving me crazy.

EDIT: So the moral of the story is, if you're using displacement maps, make sure feature displacement is turned off.
