View Full Version : A shovel throwing dirt... particle settings
FloydBishop 12-09-2002, 11:26 PM Hello all,
I was just wondering if any particle/dynamics gurus out there could shed some light on how to achieve such an effect? What type of particle would you use? How would you get varing sizes of dirt chunks?
Could someone please help me get going in the right direction?
I've looked at the Maya manuals (that don't really help you out with particles a whole lot) and I've seen some things in the online help, but I'm not sure what path to choose.
I tried using Blobies, but it makes it look like mud rather than dirt. Suggestions??

Since I got no replys, I started playing around (and beating my head against the wall at the same time).
I found that I got halfway decent results with an emitter that spit out sprites. I played around even more, and found that an emitter with an instancer that referenced actual geometrical particles made it look even better.
I still don't know how to get random rotation (other than using fields) on the particles.
Any suggestions? I'm guessing I need to use some sort of expression, but I have no experience with expressions what so ever. Is there a setting to have random rotation to particles somewhere that I didn't think to look?

Hey Floyd,
I think you're on the right track using sprites to make the effect.
THe way I'd set it up looks a bit like this:
- Make a short 10 frame looping animation of a brownish cloud. You could use the 3dcloud texture to generate this one.
- Map this one onto the sprites with random start frames. This will make your particles non-uniform and the texture will make them animate over time as well.
- By having the texture quite transparent you can essentially make more dirt by emitting alot of particles thus making a solid object.
- Set up a emitter object on the shovel itself.
- Play with the dynamics :)
Good Luck
