View Full Version : CA in XL 7 is POSSIBLE

Seems that recently a lot of people are juming in CA, partly I figure due to the recent release of R8, but a lot of people in XL 7 as well.

I'm doing some tutorials at the moment, but after trying to find some time to help three different people out with their rigs and unfortunately finding little to no time (I will get to them don't worry) I have decided to at least release a simple, stable rigged character for XL 7. No there are obvious issues with influences of the vertex maps and such, but this character is quite flexible for such a medium level rig. Hopefully though it will help those trying to rig figure out what they are doing wrong.

Here is a quick avi (1sec) just to show what it is, and the file as well

highres (http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/posed1.avi)
lowres (http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/posed3.avi)
The file (it should work in XL 6, 7, R8 (http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/5gestureriggedfinal.c4d)

Thanks Kaiskai,

Your rigged character is extremely helpful. I am using xl 7 and am expecting to get R8 soon. I think having a good understanding a rig like this is 7 will actaully help me understand better the mocca module etc.

One thing that is confusing me a lot though- I don't seem to be able to animate any motion using the bones. I can use the model tool to rotate the bones or move the IK targets in the viewer, and I can record keyframes for scale, rotation and position keyframes for the new position, but when I drag the between the playhead between the old keyframes at -1 and my new keyframes at frame 10, nothing happens- the model just stays in the new position I have created.

Could you shed some light on this for me?

Thanks so much.
J

This really a case of not reading the manual and checking the scene carefully, but seeing as how you guys are newer to C4D and this is a foreign file you most likely haven't check under EDIT/USE ANIMATION

or the animation filmstrip that has a red X on it. activate that to see animation

I'm gonna have to toy with this when I get home!

I just thought I'd say "thanks!" for now :)

The behaviour you are pointing out in your image is the inherent problem with using the coffee script on all your leg bones. The thigh and shin are becoming confused by the angle of the foot bone... but if you gave it just a little more time :) you would have noticed that by banking the foot controller a slight -8 on the pitch... the leg rights itself... when you raise your foot that high... do you keep it perfectly level anyway? Here is a detailed tutorial on this rig at http://www.wesart.com (click on "extras" and then "3dfreebies"). Although we take slightly different approaches... I have the controller at the ball of the foot etc. It is virtually the same rig.

As far as I can tell... this rig is fairly obsolete in version 8 with the creation of upvectors and soft IK... but I may be wrong. I am just getting into soft IK and really like it so far.

other than the fact that that position is utterly impossible anyways, chi's always messing me up. As for R8, its true that you need not worry about this with Soft IK, and while some of the rigs I have seen have been quite hard rigs, sometimes you just don't want that soft IK.

I prefer what little I have done with soft IK, but seeing as how I'm teaching XL 7 at the school I'm still giving focus to other people using it. Yeah rigs are basically Identical, seem to rember your file and a jumping animation or stepping on a step or something, perhaps I should include you with NAAM and Steve I have learned so much from other people back in the days, Donovan as well, even MJV of course.

Oh is anyone interested in a partial IK system for the ARMS as well, personally I hate using IK on arms but I know many prefer it so I could add that to the tutorial.

Kai, you are still the genius I remember from all those year....well, ages ago anyway (last time I was here). Er, maybe I will wait for R8 to get a student licensing sceme before I learn Ik etc.. unless the college goes Maya.......DO'H!
At last I can get back into a bit of 3D....our latest brief is a brief where we can do whatever we want......!? Yeh anything, providing it comes from within!
Have had a quick look at the R8 demo....Woooo....looking good. Not sure baout thinking particles though....or Xpresso. er, I have to ask where Blunt Trauma fits in with Xpresso though, seems a similar system?

Enough from me, time is money on this internet connection!
Keep up the good work Kai!

I find it quite funny that so many people look up to Kai as some kind of C4D god.

Anyway........

I just finished rigging a farly complex charrater using Kai's rig and so far I haven't run into any problems with it.Great Coffee expression.

Well I guess he's just a pretty nice guy ;) (maybe a little opinionated  )

it's Kai BTW :) nice looking rig haven't tried it out yet, rigging seems to be just a part of the problem with XL 7 of course there are MANY workflow improvements in 8. Ah well - make do eh?
