I'm mostly new to this, and I find that there are many tutorials out there, but none of them actually explain in detail the best way to do it.
If anyone has links or can explain, please post here.

Mostly, I just want tips.

Hey,

consider purchasing one or both of these:

http://ex.cgchannel.com/product_info.php?cPath=55&products_id=51

and

http://www.lostpencil.com/ and go to JUST ANIMATE - WALK CYCLES - for 3ds Max 5.0+

Thanks! I might consider both of those.

Here are some other resources you should check out:

and

Both are very good for people who are just learning all the way up to the seasoned veteran.

I actually have both the above books. Very good stuff. I used them in school.
What I really need right now though is stuff on the process behind 3D animation.

If you understand the stuff in those books well enough, it will apply to 3D as well. The concepts and principles of movement don't change really. From what it sounds like, you just need to practice. There are some things that you just will not get until you just... see it... one day.

Just do your walk cycle...show to some fellow animators or post it up here on the WIP: animation section and get some crits. Make some changes...get more crits. Eventually it will start to come together
