Here's the latest 30-second spec spot we did here at MAKE...hope you enjoy it! (and turn your speakers on of course)
Rendered with the 3dsmax Scanline renderer....all post done in After Effects...a very fun spot to animate overall!
The music track is "Hyperspace" by Shortee.
Post your comments :D

thats just awesome!! Great work! so were just the robots made in 3ds max?
02-07-2006, 01:01 AM
great stuff Ty, you never fail to impress. great secondary motion as usual. absolutely inspirational.
Say man sorry to get off topic but, would you happen to know the electronica track played during the MakeVisuals Demo Reel. if not, thanks anyways, Keep up the great work!
02-07-2006, 01:12 AM
Nice job as always guys , i could totally pick out your anim style even before I realized it was made by MAKE , tyson ;)
quick question ,
How did you guys achieve the athmospheric fog effect?
02-07-2006, 01:25 AM
haha awsome :D
love the feel to it, looks awsome :D
02-07-2006, 01:42 AM
hehe very cool and inspiring. I love the way the baseball charachters run away, hilarious ! Good stuff !
02-07-2006, 01:50 AM
sweet! I saw this on your website when I was desperately searching for that cool birdie clip you did a while back.
you guys put out better and better stuff.
02-07-2006, 02:05 AM
Awesome work - could you please share some behind the scenes info and explain a bit on how you acheved the toon shader?
02-07-2006, 02:06 AM
haha. fantastic! i always enjoy really well done CG characters in ads. the ones i see on TV in Australia are all very cheesy. well done.
02-07-2006, 02:39 AM
wow!! very nice... i like the vector way of 3d. nice....
02-07-2006, 02:49 AM
Very nice! Great animations and a good color sceme / style.
02-07-2006, 04:02 AM
Howdy rblitz...good to hear from you man :) Yep...everything was made in 3dsmax....After Effects was used for color correction/editing etc but the rest was Max.
Hey Keetell, glad you liked it man...I believe it's a Blank and Jones track but I'll have to check with the ol' boss tommorow.
Hey Sheep! Thanks for the plug mate! You rock! :D The fog was done using the default Fog atmospheric and tweaked it for each scene as necessary.
Hey dividebyzero, there's no toon shader....the materials are simply 100% self-luminous to avoid shading and shadow. :)
Thanks everyone else for dropping by too! Your comments are very much appreciated.
Wow tyson!! that looks so funny!!
Love the emotions u have shown on the "flat" characters!! :D
02-07-2006, 04:23 AM
it's a perfect realisation! congrats!
02-07-2006, 04:37 AM
As always...you are an inspiration man
02-07-2006, 05:22 AM
I love it man...very funny and satisfying :D
02-07-2006, 05:26 AM

02-07-2006, 07:10 AM
Ha hah a!! I knew it was going to get plugged the first time you showed me!
It is also obvious your style on the animations and camera work, T!
Can I still give you 5 *****??? :)
Like a friend of mine always says... KEEP KEEPING!!! :bounce:
02-07-2006, 07:41 AM
Haha! Great stuff! I love the shading style. Must have rendered fast as hell since you could skip raytracing, eh?
do it well......
but I don't like the story
02-07-2006, 10:34 AM
Tyson, never cease to amaze me with your work!
We have to talk to Cgtalk.com management to increase the stars options, sometimes 5 isnt enough....
02-07-2006, 11:02 AM
You made Front Page Man!! Congrats Tyson! Excellent stuff!
02-07-2006, 12:00 PM
Just WOW ... after seeing this I checked out your site. I can't believe your only 19!! WOW ... just WOW, your stuff is soooooooo good!! Man you got talent to spare!
02-07-2006, 12:35 PM
Oh Tyson I freakin love this piece. When will it be broadcast or is it on the tv tube already?
To me this blows away the godzilla and robot super bowl spot because the characters are such lovable stylized robots.
02-07-2006, 12:45 PM
impressive work, i like it.
02-07-2006, 01:56 PM
It's really impressive work. Style is simple but the animation is hard core :buttrock:
I just wonder how long has it take and how many people've worked on it..
Keep excellent working..
02-07-2006, 02:36 PM
Hey Mr. Positive, no tv time for this one, it was just a spec spot :)
Thanks for all of the encouragement everyone! It's good to hear that you enjoyed watching it!!! :D
02-07-2006, 02:41 PM
I should also mention that the audio track is "Hyperspace" by Shortee.
02-07-2006, 03:09 PM
Awesome spot....congrats guys....very beautiful and fun to watch (5 stars from me) :bounce: .
Very good follow up animation by the camera....weee...great :)
02-07-2006, 03:27 PM
Hey Mr. Positive, no tv time for this one, it was just a spec spot :)
That's a shame that won't see the air waves, but I must profer myself to humiliation....what's a spec spot?
02-07-2006, 04:50 PM
Sweet! Great job guys!
02-07-2006, 05:04 PM
how many months long did this all take start to finish?
02-07-2006, 05:18 PM
A spec spot is a spot a made to demonstrate the cabalities of a company only, and is not actually made for the company that is branded in the spot.
02-07-2006, 05:54 PM
Very cool. How was the fragmentation done?
02-07-2006, 06:20 PM
Actually, a spec spot is also sometimes done as a test/proof of concept/portion of a bid for a (potential) client. Spec spots are... speculative... you create them with the hope of getting work in the future, and that can happen in many different ways.
02-07-2006, 06:35 PM
Oh come on Danny...like YOU know what you're talking about :D
02-07-2006, 06:44 PM
Lovely clip guys!
I really like the animation! How did you get the handheld camera look?
I'm currently experimenting with boujou, by filming around my office and feeding it back into the 3d camera to 'film' entirely different scenes.
BTW, I love using constant shaders, makes everyone think you are somekinda' FlashMX genius! :)
02-07-2006, 06:49 PM
I love the camera throughout and the cuts. The 3/4 frame blending you got going on between some of the moving shots make it very slick.
Nice unsaturated feel to the whole thing colourwise.
Robot animation isnt too sloppy either:applause:
02-07-2006, 06:54 PM
Camera animation is pretty straight-forward....I set out the base movements and then layer several rotational noise controllers overtop for both subtle shakes/hand-held movements and impact-shakes, as necessary.
02-07-2006, 07:58 PM
I liked it a lot, save for the 'oops' joke at the end - felt a bit sub-par compared to the silly and unobvious humour of the rest of the video. Still, very nice. I could rewatch this every day for a loooong time!
02-07-2006, 08:18 PM
wow ... it's so amazing as well, Tyson :)
the idea is so awsome too ... congrats :applause:
02-07-2006, 08:20 PM
The animation is amazing, love the two robots at the end running away. Great stuff.
02-07-2006, 09:47 PM
02-07-2006, 09:56 PM
as a frequent visitor of your site and a huge fan of your work i allready saw it there :)
and i just loved it, just like all your stuff.
you rock dude !!
02-07-2006, 09:57 PM
Wow, great one!
OK, time to tell us.... How long did it take this time? One afternoon???
You guys always pull off some amazing stuff in such short period of time!
I like it a lot
02-07-2006, 10:14 PM
:scream:
Gee man, I always tought you might be too crazy... I am sure now...
You are crazy... *lol*
Superb! Your animation level is too good, I really apreciate your style.
Once more, congratulations!
And please, keep sharing your stuff with us, it is very inspiring, thanks!
02-08-2006, 04:12 AM
Again Ty some good uses of skills here, character sutff is again on point like ur other stuff, although there was one point that look a lil stiff (imo) when the bot throws the ball(truck) the the batters motion looks a lil strange, but that just might be me, But still sweet stuff!!
02-08-2006, 01:02 PM
That was sooo cool. :D I saw it on your web site not too long ago. Freak'n awesome. :D
02-08-2006, 03:21 PM
Excellent Work!! The animation is superb...
The timing is excellent...
02-08-2006, 07:17 PM
Haha nice!! That ending was perfect!
I gotta say some of the animation could have been pushed much farther, especially the pitcher throwing the ball. But the overall peice is just awesome!!
02-08-2006, 07:37 PM
I totally agree toonpang, if there were any shots that I was most unhappy with, it was the pitching/batting shots.
Thanks for stopping by!
02-08-2006, 08:40 PM
Great fun. Another hit for you and MAKE.
Yeah, the pitch... oh well.
I came into my new job after lunch and people were gathered looking at this. I was like "Hey I know these guys". Impressed, they were.
I almost hope you keep speculating, cause when you actually get a job you wont be allowed to be this cool.
02-08-2006, 10:14 PM
cause when you actually get a job you wont be allowed to be this cool.
Ain't that the truth!
For the city, how many differant building models did you use. It looks like a large city, but some of the buildings look the same.
It is an excellent shortcut. In total how many city buildings did you model.
Also how long did this take you?
02-08-2006, 11:55 PM
There are a total of 15 different bulidings which were duplicated throughout.
As for how long it took to make, I'm not sure but it was a few weeks working on it on and off.
That is so awesome. You are a great animator, you can work the camera and your pretty fast. Honestly some folks working in CG are so slow. Great work!! Hopefully someday when my business is up and running I can hire you!!
02-09-2006, 06:56 AM
Tyson.. great job.
Walk into Lukes office, and tell him you're leaving, and say you got a job at MakeVisualLA.com
(this is his brother John)
02-09-2006, 01:25 PM
good tuches in places...the start is awsome, I especially like the footballers in the start...congratulations
02-10-2006, 08:22 AM
Fantastic work! I really love the "simple looking" style of it all. Damn, this is the kind of thing that made me want to be in 3D. You should be very proud!
02-10-2006, 09:35 AM
how much time to make it?
great work, very compliments
02-10-2006, 11:57 PM
