Hi Everyone

Here is another little project that I started 7 or 8 days ago, it’s supposed to be a
Probe that explores other planets. I put in rubber tracks so it’ll be able to move around on the rocky ground, and some lights. I also put in a camera, but I don’t thing it really resembles one, looks more like a ray gun or something.

looking great so far! I would only say try using the "bevel" more often on the edges to give them a realistic 3d form.

Ah thanks a lot for the tip, is there any specific edges that looks like it needs to be beveled?

I went ahead and used arrows to point out the main edges you want beveled(since they are the most evident to the viewer) and try to make sure it bevels correctly all around the entire edge loop(all views). I made some notes on the pic below. I would also add more bolts and nuts and grooves in the main part of the probe, the scale of larger objects to much smaller and more detailed, like bolts and screws, will help to show better structure and depth to hard surface modeling(stole that from my Maya teacher).

I quite like it, needs more detail though. My only crit is that the tracks look like a little werid - maybe instead of holes, maybe extrude them ?

Here is a update, I just added some plates, wires, and a "energy storing device" I also made the holes in the wheels bigger. I tried chamfering the edges but when I do it, the side looks really blocky. Anyone know why?

Good job dude. Keep it up.

I used to have a link to this tutorial for more realistic beveling but all my bookmarks are gone.

I will try to explain the principle.

Add another line on each side of the edge. I think that way it shades it more realisticaly and you dont get the apearance of the unrealisticaly sharp edge. Ive never tried it cause I dont do much hard surface modeling...

And good luck on the low poly character youre gona work on. Im still struggling with the one I started.

Anyways youre doing good, keep posting updates.

Hey,

The track wheels need a lot more detail - try searching Google Images for 'Mars Rover', may give you some ideas for your model.

Have a look at vehicels that do have tracks, tanks for example ( but make them space like )
