View Full Version : Shared normals between 2 polyobjects?
NeonGuy 12-09-2002, 07:57 PM hi! it's me again, another problem :(((
i want to share the normals along 2 poly object's border edges. so if i assign a skeleton to them and rotate the joints, the two objects will look like one single object. i want to see a single smooth surface, not two!!!
thanks for your help.
if this isn't clear, i will attach a pic :)

Hi,
after binding your skin select the border vertices and apply Average Normals. make sure vertices at the same position have the same skin weights, so your model doesn`t break.
Have fun.

hi tom hain,
i did what you said earlier but it doesn't work :(
when i apply the average normal, it smooths out the edge i want, but if i rotate the joints i get a black area around the averaged vertices. i guess this is because the average normal action locks my vertex normals. so i unlock the normals but then the edge shows up again.
any other idea?

Hi NeonGuy,
i`ve tried it. you`re right, the normals are loked, you can see it if you display vert normals, they keep always direction.
The only solution I see at the moment is to sew it together to a single mesh.
cheers

I may have a solution.
Depending on how many vertices you have, you can copy and paste the normals in the component editor.
You may not get the exact numbers. But you can get close. And they will blend.
