Hi all,

Part 4 (the final part) is now published from my website www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com/).

Part 3 is now published from my website www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com).

Part 2 is now published and available from the same www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com).

I've now published Part 1 of my New Ocean techniques in Blender in a shameless attempt to meet my own deadline. You can find the link to the PDF at www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com)

:wavey: Cog

My new ocean tutorial will be finished this week. To 'Wet' your appetite I have uploaded a demo movie of what's achievable using standard unified renderer and in-built procedural textures.

Visit www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com) and follow the february 2006 links.

Full details of how to create oceans and seas of all types will be described in the tutorial so look out for its release this week.

Very nicely done Cog.

Would any of these techniques be usable in the Game Engine? I hope to start working on a "boat simulator" soon and one obstacle will be to create realistic looking water...

Thanks! Can't wait for the release of the tutorial!

Say, Cog, have you seen the thread on the FXWARS forum for the new FX Challenge? It is to make a CG OCEAN! Here's the link: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=309275

Go show 'em what Blender can do!

Hi Hunkadoodledoo,

I'm up for that challenge so I have placed my interest in that thread. Thanks for pointing me there.

This is awsome, but I think the wave break need more attention.

The animation is quite nice, I wondered for a while what was wrong? Then I realised that mostly this kind of sea is seen from a boat, but there isn't any rocking!:hmm: Ha ha, then it would make us all sea sick, perhaps a good measure of your sucess.

I love all of your Tuts Cog, keep up the good work (I wish we had REAL volumetrics).

Maybe the water needs a bit more variation of colour and reflection, and a bit of spray of the wave caps?

You know, I was thinking that the speed of the wave animation could be halved. What you're doing looks fantastic (although the beaches I've been to in jersey don't have water that blue). I was also thinking that, that far out and away from land, the base color of the water would be a *lot* darker. I mean, I don't know where you live, Cog, and the water could very well look exactly like that, but the places I've been have all been much darker farther out from shore and lighter, like the sea you've made, closer in.

That first PDF was a terrible tease, by the way. I was really getting into it when it ended. Glad the second's out. ^-^; Good luck with the ocean FX compo!

Hi all,

Part 3 of my New Ocean Techniques is published. It's now going to be a massive 4 part tutorial with the last part sometime tomorrow, unless work explodes, or I do.

As normal the link can be found here. www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com)

Hi kattieru,

You know, I was thinking that the speed of the wave animation could be halved. What you're doing looks fantastic (although the beaches I've been to in jersey don't have water that blue). I was also thinking that, that far out and away from land, the base color of the water would be a *lot* darker. I mean, I don't know where you live, Cog, and the water could very well look exactly like that, but the places I've been have all been much darker farther out from shore and lighter, like the sea you've made, closer in.

The speed of the waves can be used to suggest the scale as well as the type i.e stormy or calm. However, its possible to easily change the speed. Either by using the Time IPO setting or altering the Texture IPOs as described in part 4 of the tutorial. The colour of the sea was created purely to be different from some of my other ocean concepts. I probably like you live in an area, UK, where the colour of the sea is often dark grey. However, my ocean shader material can be modified to produce almost any colour on the planet, or off of it for that matter. I give some examples in the latter parts of the tutorial.

That first PDF was a terrible tease, by the way. I was really getting into it when it ended. Glad the second's out. ^-^; Good luck with the ocean FX compo!

Your right it is a tease, although unintentional. Too much work both at home and for pay interrupted my flow. It should be finished later tomorrow however.

Hi all,

People have been asking for a completed blend file for my New Ocean Techniques.

Shame on you. However, you still have to do some work. The free background sky image available from Part 4 of the tutorial needs to be correctly mapped to the Tube object before you will see the sky. So there.

new-ocean-finished.blend (http://www.cogfilms.com/new-ocean-finished.blend)

Anyway enjoy.

Exellent tutorial. I think you would have what it takes to write a book about modelling techniques. The presentation of your ocean technique was like reading such a book. Thorough, easy to understand and easy to read.
I wish you good luck with the ocean challenge. Seems to be something of a godsend to you. Two years of investicating the subject and when you finally get to the level you feel it's worth sharing with the rest of us, cgtalk arranges a competition to show the technique off. =)
When you leave your entry, remember to share the tutorial and the process that lead to the results with it. I think there is not many participating that have put so much effort on a subject.
I keep my thumbs up for you, and vote too.

I've never seen an ocean tutorial that goes into the subject at such length and in such detail. Thank you, Colin. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there besides me who really appreciate it. And much success with the competition. ;)
