Does anyone know where I can fing a tutorial on a StarTrek type teleporter effect for maya, or any suggestions on how to do this effect? Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.

do you want to make an animation with the effect or do you want to use the effect in a real movie with real persons?

if you want to use it with real persons it's more a compositing effect....

For an animation. I have to do a Mountain Dew commercial for a 3d animation class.

check google for Illusion 2.0 or 3.0 it works wonders with special FX

I would just do it in compositing. Use combustion or seomthing.
