ricozone 12-09-2002, 05:14 PM Hi,
Here is 3 different images with different compo.
The goal is to make an image only with cubes, without any vertex transformation.
Shaders and rendering are free.
Please, help me finding which one is better and give me critics... :)
Thanks a lot.
Compo1,2 : scanline render
Compo3 : GI render with Brazil

The third one is definately the best, it's the only one where you actually made an image out of just cubes, the other two are well.... just a bunch of cubes :p :p

I like the first one, but it really depends what you want to do with this image, the third picture differs completely from the other two...

Hi guys,
Thanks for your interest and advices.
That really helps me to make my choice!
I finally like the third one more and more !
Here are some modifications :
I replaced the house by a statue of a human.
I think this is more restrained and poetic.
I add a sun and seats.
I like it for the moment.
How do you feel it ?

ah, a sunny picture. I like it for it's simplicity. But the trees look like duplicates.

The third image in your first post is best.
I like the lighting in the the first post better than the new ones lighting, but i like the composition of the new one better than the first. Make the second post's image have the same lighting as the first, and you've got a winner.
Did you hand place all of those cubes or what?
Nice concept.

Yes, i also think the lighting in your first post looks better, i like the new image. Maybe you can make your lighting a little more like that one.. i dont know maybe its that sun being too bright and taking your eye from the rest of the scene. Good work :)

Here is an update of my work.
I put the lighting from my first image.
I'm not sure about the background (sky), I tryed to put a smaller sun and some birds.....or nothing but a bright sky.....I let you see.
I prefer when I use a glow (specular bloom) on the image.

Little precisions :
I make this image for a contest on a russian website :
http://www.forum3d.kom-net.pl/konkurs/cube/cube_eng.html
I also do it because the theme is fun :)
80% of work was hand placed.
Only translation - rotation - uniform scale
All objects are cubes (no rectangle)
I used some tools from max :
- "array" to make easy pattern of cubes
- "spacing tools" with a circle spline for the circles of the fountain and also the sun
- "scatter" for the bunch of cubes on the floor
- "scatter" on a dummy-sphere to make the tree leaves
- "Super Spray" (particle) for the fountain water
- maxscripts from blur studio very usefull : "pivot placer", "renamer", "light control", "camera maker"
The stem and trunk of the tree, seats, human statue, birds are hand placed.

Nr. 4 is best

Yes I agree.. 4 is the best. Great lighting on that one and the bloom effect helps it alot.

I'll cast my vote for number 6.
Its got all of the good things 4 has, but the sun being toned down like that just fits the image better composition wise... but number 4 is a VERY close second.
Keep it up,

Your creativity is wonderful!
As far as design goes, my eye is torn between a couple of things. The color, size, and intensity of the trees and statue are the same. My eyes fight going back and forth. Also, between the sun and the statue. What do you want to be your main focus. It isn't very clear in your image. Keep it up.

Can you make a render of picture #4 with birds with the cubes of the sun in a soft orange a not so bright light. Only to see how it looks like. I think this would be the best in my eyes.
NUMBER 5!!!
It's got the BIRDS!, the birds are great, plus no sun, the sun really doesn't fit in with it in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advices.
Here are 3 new renders :
http://beche.free.fr/ericbellanger/temp/wip/cubes/test_2002_12_11.jpg
I like the brown look of the image.
Cubes seem to be candy :)
I think I'm gonna keep the last one (sun + birds).
The sun ends the image and the birds give some movement to it.
It's like if the humane statue was throwing the birds in a path drawn by the sun... do you see what I mean ?

Hi everyone and thanks a lot for your interest, this really helped me.
Now I'm a little bored of turning those cubes around :hmm:
but it was really funny to do.
I was doing this stuff for a contest here :
http://www.forum3d.kom-net.pl/konkurs/cube/cube_eng.html
The deadline was 2002/12/15 but now it is postponed to 2003/01/01.
I'm impatient to see the work of other people.
Now I'm working on another image for a new contest (but i don't have enought time to create it as i want !).
I have also wrote a new post here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33164) about my new work (talking about composition again, cause the secret of a good image is in composition, definately ! :) ).
So here is the final rendering of "Cubes Garden" (if you have any other suggestions don't hesitate, thanks) :

As soon as i can, i'll put a link to download a wallpaper version for those who like it.

Hi,
the new deadline is for 2003_01_01.
So i found some time to change my image and add details.
I added some grass elements and changed the trees.
In the second image i added shadow on the floor.

Hey,
SEDAH : on the original image i got the default light of GI, this light comes from the top of the scene.
To make shadows i need a second light coming from the side of the sun, and of course this second light illuminates more the scene.
Don't you think the scene is now to much detailed ?
Is the contrast between the red tree and the green ones to much ?
