how about the following in order to bling him up.

a tat on the arm..something tribal and menacing...a gold chain...and maybe a cell phone or pager hanigng from one of his front pockets.

oh and yeah...his pants need to be about 3 sizes larger than they currently are and haning around his hips. since it's christmas...why not give him some festive YULE TIDE boxers.

12-09-2002, 04:49 PM
Don't call it a gun call it a gat. :) i think he needs a gat especially if he is bling blingin' at least thats how it is in my neighborhood :hmm:

Give him like a really big clock hangin down from a gold chain. Oooo and maybe one of them chain wallets and do some work on his "grill" , gold teeth and such.

I don't think Hilfiger would work well do FUBU instead ;)

3dhumble
12-09-2002, 06:40 PM
Give him a slack jaw and indents around his wrists from constantly being caught by one-time(police). Have the word "THUG" shaved into the back his head, and have him holding up a east-coast sign, because that's how all hip hop people do. :thumbsdow My advice, keep it simple, don't overdo the accessories. Focus more on detail. And if this model will be used in broadcast, you might want to stay away from blatant sterotypes. That's what the lugz commercials did.

Though with the bling bling it'll be pretty sweet too.

My thoughts exactly, at least in Spain, that sort of footwear is more of a ravers style, and more femenine. Personally, I wear Navy Blue VANS with custom wide white laces. I think something of this kind would stand out well with the pants.

Any comments??

policarpo
12-11-2002, 02:12 PM
i definitely like the tribal tatoo on the arm...but i'm not sure if i dig the rendering style of this version...i guess i was particularly taken by te cell shaded look...there's something nice about it.

the glow in this one is a little too gloweeeeeee....

man...you friggin rock when it comes to this model making...i gotzta make me some more 3D vinyl toys to show my appreciation for your devotion to the craft of bad ass work!!

kurt30

yeah, he might be a bit too "angelic" (I'm actually trying to hide a shotty masking job with the white outer glow)

PhilOsirus
12-11-2002, 02:17 PM
I wonder if you used the same technique I came up with. I put a bump procedural texture which gives the celshading a painted look instead of clean straight cuts on each color zones. If not, try it out:) And take a look at how it looks with only 2 color zones per color instead of 3. Cartoons usually have only 2, one for the color and one for the shadow. 3 for metalic surfaces. Give it a try:)

kurt30
12-11-2002, 02:20 PM
I'll give that a shot. I've got the rigging for the most part done and need to concentrate on getting the look of the render. BUt for now I have to go back to selling Tacos. I'll try to get something up there after lunch (USA central time)

Very nice work, I love the style. The face is really cool and I actually like the neutral, chilled look on it.

Render wise I prefered the previous style of cel-shading, I loved the colors and the harmony in the look. That last ultra-glow render just kinda breaks the harmony for me and is much more aggressive to look at.

Style wise if you're looking for that trendy look, you could consider adding a dragon on one side of the legs, lenght wise with a stitched look. Something very subtle, no bold colors. Either that, or a logo or tag on one of the back pockets of the pants.

Same for the hat, I would add a small branding logo, nothing loud, either on the front or the side.

I think I would replace the bracelet with a large faceplate watch, if you want to give your character a status symbol.

The shoes seem a little high above the sole.

Those are just final touch comments, otherwise I really love your char, I think he looks great!

I think you should tone the glow down, But other than that, I really like this modem and the concept behind it.

just saw you posted while I was writing so that last comment is about the 2nd to last post. This latest one has no speculars at all - think you should try getting st least some in

I like that last render so much more than the cel-shded stuff. Still retains that cartoony feel but not as cheesy.

I think the speculars are a little burnt tho, especially around the face. Maybe lower the light intensity or at least change the angle.

I know you guys are just having fun with this but why does he need a gun, pager, gold or platinum teeth and to be from the hood?
Because he's black?
Hip hop is about style, not necessarily about drugs, violence and the ghetto.
Sorry if I am coming off as a little sensitive but it seemed like all the suggestions were immediately turning the character into a gangster.
Great model btw.
I really like the render style. Keeping it stylized and simple is what separates it from alot of the generic renders we see all too often.
I would suggest keeping it simple, as adding too many accessories will make your model less effective. I think this is a case of less is more. Pick your accessories carefully. The tat is a nice touch. The gold watch seems too flat and saturated to my eyes. It cheapens your great character.
Well, that's my 2 cents. I'll get off the soap box now.
Cheers y'all

Slurry, I suggested shoes, nothing violent IMO... many people might be wanting to turn him into the "rapper" stereotype, as in black, with bling, agressive and doing hand signs.
I intend to make a b-boy soon, not as in breaker but as in Hip-hop disciple and he'll be more of the Spanish B-boy type. The problem about what colour to make the character is mind-boggling. See, if I wanted to make a b-boy in my image, I'd make him white, but then might be accused of inverse-racism or whatnot... he could even be asian, Hip-hop's elements span the whole globe.
In general, if art is intented for non-hip-hop practicioners to observe, you usually get a sort of stereotype "rapper" as he/she is easily identifiable than your local "version" of a b-boy.

My two €urocents...

regarding his animation-- in my opinion, there are no hiphop dancers. If u want something thug-ish look at DMX, u know running across a stage, flailing his arms around, and grabbing his crotch the whole time- that's about all hip hop dancer does. All the bling bling , shoulder-shakin little kids are a direct product of old skewl breakdancing...n some pop n lock. So look at Mr Wiggles...he's real good.

Hip-hop is not "all" about "blingin" and guns and such.

Here is a good cultural link-

http://www.daveyd.com/

Hip-hop is above all a big part of the modern Afro-American culture. Peoples of European backgrounds and Asian and what not may imitate hip-hop, like hip-hop, and be a part of the Hip-Hop scene, etc. But never forget that Hip-hop is an aspect of Afro-culture the same as Reggae and Drum n’ Base. Give credit to those to whom it is due. It's good to see artist identify with any part of African culture in a positive way especially when so much of the media depicts a negative image of African peoples.

And yes hip-hop originated in the ghetto and is still a part of the ghetto scene.

Allot of influential and powerful hip-hop figures originated in what people call the "ghetto". People of urban cultures all over the world can identify more readily with hip-hop but so do some others. But as an artist you can pick what level of identity to portray in your character based hopefully on personal knowledge and experience of the chosen subject. And if that character portrays a person please think about
how your art reflects that persons background and culture.

Hopefully all of your experience on a persons background doesn't come from tv, magazines and music videos. Meet people and get to know them. This is the best way to gather knowledge from others.

Great work kurt30!

Hip-hop reached Europe thx to Afrika Bambaata if I remember correctly. Its really big in France and Spain for all I know /thats how far I travel ;) ). I don't like it when people simply say "Oh, you guys are just some Wiggas who're trying to copy some other style". I'm not stating you said that, JA-Forreal, I'm simply stating it. I laugh at the thought of many unreal imitators that just dress really exagerrately (sp?) and walk around half-crouched, west-siding with their hands and barking out "Yo, yo, YO!". Theres alot of that everywhere. I've met a few that say the do it because its "cool and a good way to pick up chicks". But a B-boy ain't measured by how wide his pants are.
What I like about hip-hop in Spain(and all over the world) is wherever it has spread to from square one, it has become unique in each area, blending in with local customs and beliefs, not CHANGING hip-hop but living in harmony with this form of personal expression and you own culture. Making hip-hop something personal, not a hobby. IMO, thats what counts. And not to do it "cuz it looks cool" but because its what moves you.

This is an opinon, of course, and being so, anyone is entitled to think otherwise, but its what I'm believing now. Sorry turning this into a weird monologue-ish thing, but you know, sometimes you feel you have to have your say...

Ha, it's the same here in America. Right now I Live in Chicago, which is smack dab in the middle of the USA. It's actually pretty weird how the hiphop scene works out here, as Chicago is pretty much an even blend of East coast and West coast styles. This is especially evident when people from out of state come up here for events, you can tell who is from Miami, or who is from Boston, or who is from LA, or Ft. Wayne, etc etc etc......

I don't agree with JA-Forreal. Rap has nothing to do with anything African or anything like that anymore than Rock is part of the white-o-culture. In France you have some of the greatest rap artists (mainly the IAM gang) and they are Italian, Arab, French, black and more. Before them there were plenty of awsome French break-dancers and the likes.

Hip-hop has nothing to do with anything African, more with a social background that has developed in western countries (mainly that of poor urban neighborghoods among large populated cities and rich neighborhoods).

Reggae started with instruments specific to a region and a culture, not Rap. Furious Five used what? Keyboards and spoke of their social background, which had nothing to do with their color or ancestors and which was shared by millions of others across western countries. And that is the reason it spreaded over the world so quickly without commercial support, because the basis of rap (the lyrics about their social background and the instruments) were found in other western countries.

There is nothing cultural about hip-hop, except the new world-wide culture that has appeared due to the kind of system we live in, which from Asia to Europe to the USA is exactly the same.

Anyway that 3D hip-hop dude could be white or any color and it should not have any impact on how our friend here wishes him to look or move like. Color is just that, color. It has no history nor culture, and is irrevelant.

Just have to say- some of the best Hip-hop beat masters of all time should be used at one time or another in your 3d animation steppin efforts-

Dj Jazzy Jeff
Dj Shadow
Dj Honda
The Roots
Dj Premier
