Hey all,
This here my rough cut so far of a blob like character im working on. He's still very rough and Im constantly re-working the geometry and edge loops, but the main aethestic of him is there. I was originally thinking of giving him a grim looking mask of mouth cover but was compelled to give em a mouth, im still going back and forth. I plan on taking him into zbrush soon enough and tricking him out proper, let me know what you think - WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T

Well he kinda looks like Jabba the Hut and he has no nipples are my only two crits.

I love the concept, this will turn out great properly zbrushed :D, I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with it.

Hmmm....I'm not sure what to make of those scales. It's an interesting idea if it's some sort of armor formed by evolution. It might look neat if you worked it over the shoulder as well. Keep up the creativity!

this guys folds are pretty realistically modelled so i'm curious to see what you do for a rig..

I was actually originally planning to just use him in a standing for textures but Im thinking about rigging em maybe.

Really, it looks like Jabba! Great modeling, and without texture looks like some liquid surface. This in ZBrush you be a crazy stuff.

Cheers.

So far you have a great grasp on what your doing for this character. I foresee alot of great improvements the moment you bring it into Zbrush. Go for some added bubble/wart effects on the back. Other than that, your base wireframe looks awsome and it's going to subdivide real well.

Thanks for the comments so far guys!!

Thanks for the comments Cal T, I was already thinking about tricking up the back with warts and spoil type blisters, so its good to know I was on the right path, anyway Ill shut up and show ya my model before I take it into zbrush..

Wow. That's looking really terrific so far. I can't wait to see the entire body detailed. I think that the larger protrusions in the top part need some more definition. Good luck!

piajartist
03-29-2006, 10:39 PM
hey all,

just some more updates, i finished up the left and right arms polygroups as well as the belly group. as far as putting the pieces back toether I plan on exporting the maps and bringing them into photoshop and retouching the borders and eventually bring em into maya to render them.

once im in maya ill assign each map to its corresponding UV groups and walaa, at least I hope it will work so easily. come on guys I could use some input!

Well, that's exactly what I'm doing with the main character of my project : I divided the body mesh (fully unwrapped) in different parts, detailed them in Zbrush, and then, applied the normal maps generated from the Zbrush work in Max, working the transition areas with photoshop. Worked pefectly, so there shouldn't be problems doing this in Maya for your character :D

And those details you did are GREAT!

You may want to check if the export format you're using for your character to get it into Zbrush isn't messing the UV up. I had this problem, sometimes, saving the mesh as an .obj messes all my uv, and sometimes not, with the exact same export properties...

thanks for the advice happy cookie, Im glad to hear the method worked for you. hopefully maya will do the same! And yes! I did retouch the model around the point of error on the map and it works now so whatever I did worked...I guess. I did just finish my normal and disp maps a few hrs ago so Ill get those up soon, as well as the early color maps

That eye shader really brings the character to life! I think the iris should be larger though...And I miss the warmer earth-toney colors in the texture map. Keep it up though! I cant wait to see more.

Maytridy: thanks for the comments. I am still thinking about changing the back area or just add more to the texture and normal map.

Wow! This is almost front page stuff! , I like it so much! The composite in the background looks a little cut and paste though. And I think you missed a couple spots in the texture. And it needs a spec map...but it still looks really great!

DoctorMonkeyFist
04-29-2006, 09:02 AM
I've looked at your pics a bit and I think that his lower lip looks really squarish on the close up. It might be your model or your sample settings in mental ray...I'm not sure. and some of the textures become blurry. You should go back in with the simple brush in projection master and define your textures better. And I think he should be better lit. Your environment is too dark..and it makes the character too dark. Whats the point in doing a bunch of detail you can't really see? And the texture on his upper lip looks a liittle nonsensicle....I think it should radiate more from the middle. But overall I think it looks really neat....keep up the good work!
