View Full Version : Character - Elven Priestess
Nightwing 12-09-2002, 11:40 AM Hiya.
This is my second attempt at a character. Going to attempt the entire body, but as usual I've gotten bogged down with her head. I think there are probs with the eyes and definitely the mouth, which were my major shortcomings last time around.
I've already started on the skin, but I thought I'd post an untextured render here in the hope that you guys can help me sort out the geometry issues.
Comments welcome :D
Oh, poly modelling in Max5, rendered with skylight.

Thanks guys
Glad you like her, skin is coming along, will post that render soon, as well as some accessories she'll be wearing.....
Got a few weeks vacation soon, so I'll have some time to work on her!

Here's a quick test render of the skin.
It's influenced by the Priestess of the Moon from Warcraft 3 :D
She's going to have long hair (hair is my total nemesis) and her accessories will be nature/woodlands type stuff.
Eyelashes and eyebrows are temporary, and the skin itself needs work, but I'm quite happy with how it's progressing.

Wow ! I Like It ! It's very realistic I think. But only on the Ears skin must be smoothed, without any bump, but everything else is Fine.
Will you do eyebrows with somekind of Hair Simulator, or You just going to have it like a texture ?
Good Luck ! I'll be waiting for more updates !

Thanks for replying guys.
Ramzes: thanks.....yes I will sort out the bump map on the ears, as I say this is a quick test and I hope to tweak the skin a lot. The eyebrows....I'm going to try some hair simulators and see how it goes, but otherwise I'll clone some splines or something. Her eyebrows are actually going to be quite elaborate, so a texture won't really do the job.
Thirdeye: I'm going to experiment with some hair plugins and see how it goes....will be interesting :D
cheers

Very nice beginning. There is ALOT of character in the face.
When do we see more?

First of all, looks pretty good :)
some minor crits though. . .
-The forehead area between the eyebrows looks strange. . pinched, sort of. I think the nose may need to flow into the forehead more smoothly.
-The nose also looks a little off. The flaps especially look a bit off, they seem to 'smudge' downward, and the crease seems too prominant. sorry, i'm not really sure how to explain it.
-The eyes. i'm not sure what sort of look you're going for, but they seem far too big to be realistic. looks very anime, but if you were going for that, then its all good :)
The skin looks really nice so far  exept for the tattoo, its colour looks too sickly, i think. like a pea soup stain, rather than a cool war tattoo.
anyway, very nice work - looks promising :) hope I was constructive

ehhhhhh....been away for a while :D
Cheers for the replies guys.
Sigil: Thanks V much...look out for updates in early Jan, I'm on vacation and also trying to spend some time *away* from the computer :)
Hellrender: LOL! Yeah that's actually deliberate. Given my tentative modelling skills I sorta got it wrong (again), but I ended up liking it, so I think I might reduce em somewhat but not too much...not shooting for realism here :)
Bitmap: Thanks, I promise any attractiveness is pure fluke on my part!
Atmos_fear: Thanks, and yeah there'll definitely be updates soonish....:D
Anthony: Thanks, V useful comments, and I know what you mean about the nose, will attend to that as well as other issues you raised.
She's gonna end up being anime-ish I suppose. Later when I'm better at this I will shoot for realistic proportions, but the influence here was more pixie than elf I think :)
Cheers

Cool work. Although the bodypaint looks kinda washed out, it could use some contrast, and the skin generally looks kinda old wrinklish I would say :). The eyes look a bit misplaced, like someone pulled them out a bit from the eye socket. The ear is to thick, for a princess I would expect it to be gentle and soft. Greta work, but much work is still ahead of you. Try to enchant her with some charm. Cheers

Crash, that normally happens if you don't boost the output or self-illum a bit. I think its coming along beatifully, but the tip of the ears are a little too sharp ;)
Carl
EDIT: Also, the area that the green shape overlaps the eyebrow needs to be changed, they don't normally paint on facial hair. Either make it stop before and after the eyebrow or find some other way, but overlapping doesnt look good IMO...

Hi
Crash: Good point about the bodypaint....as some others have mentioned before, it definitely needs work. To be honest I haven't decided for sure whether she'll have the tribal paint or not. About the ear, I think I know what you mean, it needs refinement, but rather than a delicate elf she's based on the Archer Priestess of the Moon from Warcraft3.....that and the wild elves from the DND world....so she's closer to nature etc etc.
CarlCampbell: Do you suggest I slap an output map in the eye shader? I'll give that a try. Green paint stuff.....as mentioned that's definitely not a sure thing. I've also been experimenting with some elvish runes (similar to the inscription on the ring in the movies) and might go with a tattoo-type thing rather than paint....either way that'll change :)
Cheers

I think it should be a tattoo instead of paint or ink... and def a ruin :D

SWEET! Beautiful Eyes, and I like the paint as paint, what are you thinking about as far as hair style... or does she have hair?

superb modeling job!
awesome mesh! :)
If you want it to be be realistic, maybe you should let the light come through the ears, with a back light... those ears deserve to be top quality, I love them.
I love the make-up to ...

Hey
Bitmap: Hah! Seems the jury's out on this one, I might have to end up flipping a coin :)
Merlin: Thanks, not 100% settled on a hairstyle, I'd prefer it to be long, but it's probably going to require a bunch of individual maps and such, which I'm not looking forward to....mapping and UV unwraps are not my strong point. I don't have a hair plugin, and I want to make the hair at least fit in with the rest of her, so I'll see how things go.
MaDSheeP: Ta V much :D
CiF: Thx, glad you dig the ears :). I'll look at either some Sub surface Scattering or even a low output map in the shader to simulate what you're suggesting.
Lots of cool suggestions...much appreciated guys, thanks again.

yeah, a backlight on the ears and some Subsurface Scattering will look really good.. especially if you make the ears thin and add some vains inside...
the model is really great... keep it up!

I think the ears need to be lowered a little bit; I'm no expert on elven anatomy, but the top part of the ears should start at the middle of the head near the horizontal of where the eyes lie. The bottom should end on the horizontal where the nose ends. (at least for humans :)
Secondly, the head looks a little big compared to her small neck...
Plus, yeah, I agree with the other posts--the eyes as well as the eyebrow area are all too large.
Awesome work so far tho! Keep it up

Hey, Nightwing, this a relly nice Elven head
The ear is all right, I like the idea fot backlight of the ears.
But I think you must lighten a bit her eyes's green.
Keep the good work

Lookin good....it looks like her jawline has a weird curve to it tho....

Thanks for the replies guys
Soundwav_: Thanks V much, and the subtle hint of veins is a good idea, I'll look into that as well.
Mickeloviche: Thanks, the neck size...have honestly not spent time on the proportions, but once the head is complete I'm planning to start on the torso etc, by which time I'll make sure the props are ok.
Eclipse: yeah definitely going to try the backlight idea and see how it goes. The eye colour......I think it's my lighting that needs work.
Proton: Yes indeed, about halfway along the jawline there's a weird dent...will sort that out!
Am back at work this coming week so will have access to the files, look for updates soonish :D
Cheers
