Know any step-by-step tutorials on weightpainting / skinning? What about any on creating a low poly control mesh that's connected to the high poly mesh used for rendering?

i don't know of any tutorials on skinning... it's not really a 'tutorial-able' thing... you just have to use common sense (if i rotate my shoulder, it doesn't rotate my hips so my hips should probably not receive any influence from my shoulder...). this web site is a little bit helpful as far as figuring out maya's skinning quirks. you have to skim down to the bottom to get to the weighting section but maybe it'll be of some help.

as far as proxies and stuff, get the book The Art of Rigging. one of the best things you could do for yourself as a character setup human.

yes, Soulcialism is right.. i agree with him..

one thing about the low-poly to high-poly thing... i've been using this alot..

say u have a high poly mesh of ur character. then make a low res mesh from this, which actually is similar or encompasses the high-mesh character in volume .. then skin the low -res to ur skeleton, and skin the high-res to the same skeleton.

finish painting ur low-res and select ur low-res, shift select ur high-res and go to edit smooth skin > copy paint weights option.this wud copy the weights from the low-res to the high-res.. this can be very useful.. so the better smoothing u do no ur low-res, the easier ur weights will be on ur high -res... and the low-res volumetrically fitting ur high-res, effects the accuracy of the skin transfer.
