View Full Version : Lock Vieports?
BobbyB 02-01-2006, 01:01 AM There may have been somthing ive missed all these year of using max but ive finally hit breaking point and want to know if there is a way to lock a Max viewport so that you can't rotate it into a user view.
I have developed a bad habbit of rotating my views into user and get a little tired of setting them back.
Cheers

Im not sure about locking them, but a quick way of getting the view back to normal is shift+z

Yeah i know but usually by the time i want the fron view back again ive rotated in user a heap of times.
I just want a way to lock them. Light Wave has locked viewports. A front view is a front view until you select another view. You should only be able to pan not rotate and loose the view.
Light Wave also has a feature that will pan all the other viewports when you pan one. So if you pan one down to the hight of your characters feet the rest will pan down to the hight of ur characters feet.
Very good for modeling

this is more of a dirty workaround, but what about creating a free camera, setting it to ortho graphic projection, and then locking it's rotation axis. After doing that though it looks like to 'zoom' you have to use the FOV. Could also setup a hotkey/button to run the following maxscript viewport.ResetAllViews() though again it isn't the real answer to your question, if i think of anything else I'l let you know, good luck with it

I have been hoping for a viewport lock since Max version 1. Guess I can keep on dreaming because this seems to be very difficult for Autodesk to include in Max.
I don't want a work-around. I don't want a script. I don't want to reset my viewports. I simply want a viewport lock button in the upper left area next to the viewport name on each viewport window that locks the viewport. I still want to zoom in and out and pan around I just do not want to be able to rotate.
If there was one thing my Autodesk Subscription funds could buy me, a viewport lock would be way up there.

one thing I like about C4D - you CANNOT rotate in an orthagonal view :P

Ooops, i´m totally on the other side. I really love the ability to rotate on every viewport. For me is the best way to go to user mode where i do a lot of modeling or just for selecting purposes, and when i want another view, i just hit the hotkey or shift+z. In other apps like maya i have been a bit out of place without that feature :P. A button to lock or unlock would be cool because it will give you the option, but as it is now for me is perfect :)
All the best

i Guess it depends what program you start with. I started in lightwave which has fixed viewports.
It doesnt seem like any one has any fixes to the problem. Shame that.

yar, i was hoping someone had found something. right now i'm teaching Max to beginners and a LOT of them have problems where they keep rotating all the viewports and everything gets very messy. i was hoping for a lock, but i guess i'll just have to keep waiting. maybe we can start a petition to get a lock in v9
