View Full Version : Disk Wipe Program
lehmi 01-31-2006, 11:07 AM Hi, a year ago I found a pretty nice utility from a mainboard maufacturer.
You could wipe out your free space on any HD.
Do you know it? Or can you link me to a tool which does that and is freeware?

You don't state what OS you want this software for.
Anyway, what you want is some software that'll "zero out" your drive... recording zeros over whatever was previously on your hard drive. Some utilities do multiple passes of zeroing. The more passes, the harder it is for anyone to retrieve data from your drive.
Mac OS X
OS X can do this without extra software. Click on 'Disk Utility' and there are 4 options to erase data:
1. Don't Erase Data (erase directory only)
2. Zero Out Data
3. 7-Pass Erase
4. 35-Pass Erase
Mac OS X also has a 'Secure Erase' function which will erase a single file, then write zeros over the top of it.
Windows
Here's a list of 3rd party utilities that can zero out your data multiples of times:

There are many to choose from that'll do the job you want.
