View Full Version : animated storyboards vs. live action storyboards
Bluebird2602 01-31-2006, 06:15 AM Hey everyone,
After having created both some storyboards for animation and boards for live action, I am looking back and wondering more about what the differences between the two really are?? I have searched through the storyboards forum, but my search did not turn up any similar topics. Perhaps some differences might be obvious yet still I am very curious to hear what others opinions' on this topic might be and or any other debates.
I am currently teaching a intro course on animation and am thinking of discussing the topic sometime later in the semester with my students. Any feedback would be great.

Ok, possible differences:
Animated storyboards:
impossible action/viewpoints/transformations
posing of characters is highly specific in-frame
framing is tighter??
layout is more specific
background details become very important?
are animated more heavily in animatics
are revised more
other elements are drawn outside of frames edge due to signifigance
model sheets are needed for reference
color is more specific
more direct?
super crisp
scene = shot
Live Action storyboards:
posing is less signifigant/ only framing heights important
more realistic action...though not always
camera moves are extremely specific
backgrounds are looser...or left out at times
animated less in animatics
revised less
color sometimes less important
sometimes elements are drawn outside framing edges, but usually only for camera moves
less direct
characters don't require model sheets for reference
costumes are not as tight as they might be in a layout of the designs
crisp but mainly for text/notes/arrows and things
scene = sequence
These are just some initial thoughts. Possibly more differences I didn't think of???

By live action storyboards I assume you mean photo storyboards. I used both myself , depending on the project they both have their advantages. If I am shooting a live action film I would definitely go ahead get some actors and take some pictures and figure out where the camera will be in shoots and such. But i personally like experimenting with the still boards as well , It is faster to brainstorm with drawings than it is with photo storyboards.

By live action storyboards you mean what sheep said or you mean storyboards for Live action movies.. and with animated storyboards you mean previz ? or storyboards for CG films.. erm
:eek:

Thank you both Sheep & Nucleo for the interest. That is really interesting about those photo boards. I have never done photo boards, but I can certainly see their usefulness as far as framing and how actors might look on camera. I have always just perferred to pencil it all out by preference I suppose. And yes by live action storyboards I mean: sequences shot on some sort of (real physical) camera with actors and sets, etc...
Also, Nucleo when I say "animated storyboards" I probably should have just typed: animation storyboards for CG,2d,stop motion, pixelation, paper-cut out, etc...the "animatics" are the ones I refer to as pre-viz type stuff. I consider animatics an extension of storyboards that are just put into motion.
I must say it has been still difficult to find a lot of differences between "live action storyboards" & "animation storyboards". I did find some interesting info on storyboards over at animationmeat.com .....I found that (I guess to no suprise) a lot of the same camera rules/rules of action apply in the Simpson's style of storyboarding just as they would in live action. Similar issues with the "180 -rule" come up in their little guide to the Simson's storyboard department. Interesting stuff.
