View Full Version : reactor: making a RIBBON following a path

An object is describing a path. A long, easy ribbon is attached to it, drawing this path. What parameters should I use to make a realistic ribbon following a path (drawing a letter in the air)?

Thank you! :)

Here's an example:

You can just get that effect with Ghost Trails. Get it at http://www.snotmonster.com

Ghost Trails doesn't work with max5. An I need a real-looking ribbon.

Thank you anyway! Very nice plugin. Hope it will work with max5 some days... :)

But what I need is a cloth-looking ribbon. It must be a bit wider and twisting a lot.

Er..... have you tried working this out yerself? I mean its not the kinda thing that someone would know off the top of their head. Have you tried any experiments with this effect yourself yet?

Of course i tried! I worked with that for a week after work. Sincerelly I can't understand what you wanted to say.

Most of r4 plugins work on r5 and a friend of mine said it worked. But well, that doesn't suit your needs :).But well, look at this tutorial, the difference is it makes ropes, but it should work with a normal cloth

You can try with Flex,Reactor cloth and simcloth

Have you tried path defom?

well an idea that i would tey (i never attempt this tho b4) would be to draw the line you wanted to follow throughout the animation and the creat a segmented plan and put a path deform like 3rd Dimentia just said... and maybe apply a subtle flex modifier or something to give it alittle bit of jiggle and stretch?

another thing i thought of whn typing this was the flag tut in the max manual.. seeing it is cloth and utilized the gravity (think it is space warp or something, cant remember the wording) but when the ribbond would be moving it would have natural down movment... so i guess if you made the actual bar and ribbon with a flex/or other modifier on it and had it move thru the animation it would act as a real ribbon?
oh yeah, quick edit.. maybe add a slight WIND element to make the ribbon deform better when it is moving

good luck.. would like to see your outcomes :) keep us posted please

I would use simcloth. Make the plane, make it a editable mesh, select the vertexes that should be.....wait, someone already explained this:http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/87 It's a tutorial for a chord, but it's the same way i would do it for a ribbon.

I agree with Martijn Wijmer. Reactor is great for rigids, but Simcloth is a lot easier to use for cloth. Does Simcloth work with R5 though?

Don't know if it works for max5, but most script who work in v4, also work in v5, so it's really worth a try. So try it!! (http://www.chaosgroup.com/) (It's under software)
