View Full Version : Low Poly Space Ship for Top-Down Game
AgentX 12-08-2002, 08:11 PM Hey all. This is something i did in a few hours yesterday. It is a low poly model for my friends game he is making. It is a top down game and the model will probably be about an inch wide on teh screen. The ship is about 330 polys, and has a 256x256 texture on it. I would love crits and comments. Thanks. Here is a 3quater pic of it. (a bit close up to camera)

I have some suggestions:
First, since this is a top-down game, make sure you don't waste any texture space by texturing the bottom of the model. I can't see if you have done that or not from these pics, but if you have put some coloring on the bottom, those precious pixels of texture space would be better used on the portions of the ship that will actually be seen.
Second, the texture could use much more contrast, and some more details like paneling and vents/exhausts, etc. The line around the cockpit woulc be more appealing if it were much thinner.
Good work, hope to see improvements! :)

Nice start, how about a top view?
Will the ship ever be viewed from an angle other than small overhead, as this will factor into alot of aspects.
As sanhueza stated, all detail on the bottom of the ship should be minimised to the bare essentials, and if you'll only ever see it from the top, delete all lower faces. Try and avoid using any fully vertical polies, angle them in a bit to maximise normals facing upwards (eg the hex gun barrel on the wings).
I disagree with the canopy detail, by the time the models zoomed in you'll prolly find the rim detail is the right thickness, although it could be emphasised with some highlights, rivets etc. However the rest of the skin could really be beefed up. Even if its sposed to be cartoony, keep the saturation and add the suggested detail. Don't forget explosion/burn/scratched damage too.
More later, the starts looking good.
