View Full Version : Mac nVidia 7800GT bug?
monsterfish 01-29-2006, 03:27 PM I am hoping that other Quad Mac users with nVidia 7800 cards could test to see if it's just me or a problem with Cinema. I have reported this to Maxon.
Software:
OSX.4.4
Cinema 9.5.2
Clean install - no plugins
Cinema works fine in 9.0 but locks up in 9.5.x
Make a spline or a model (editable) and switch to points mode and then using the move tool, double click on a point. A dialog box comes up. Click cancel or o.k. - I don't think,it really matters. If I continue to doble click other points, my program stops responding. In some cases it happens right after hitting cancel.
Here is what I know so far:
Switching from OpenGL to software shading fixes the problem. That kinda negates the reason for buying the faster card though.
I can use OpenGL but I have to turn off the Active Object Plane and the Highlight Plane. Once again, this solution decreases the performance.
In version 9.0 I can have both of the extensions enabled and everything is solid. No problems. I know that I can drop back a version if I want to take advantage of my card but the reason I spent the money for 9.5 was so I could use the new features.

works fine for me - no crash
but that is not with the active object plane "on"
which i have never had enabled - but when i turned it ON - it gave a warning dialog box that said this could severely impact the stabiliy of the system - so fair warning was given.
(the warning did not show again until i quit and relaunched the c4d app - and then it showed again)
i'm not sure if you can blame C4D for this - maybe the increased OGL speeds utilize newer OGL settings that are the culprit - not sure, but simply turning that setting off still lets OGL speed increases be seen and utilized - just not that one... (and probably this could change with a next software update - either osx or c4d)
OGL crashes are nothing new and on the PC side just versions of nvidia drivers on some video cards can make the whole system unstable or just one rare situation - seems it will be the norm and as OGL gets more and more entrenched it is only going to show more. for instance the new AE7 is getting issues already that seem to be related to it's use of OGL for it's interface

Sketchbook - Yes, I had posted this last week but it was under a thread about bug fixes that I had found when searching for clues to my problem. That thread is full of other info/issues that don't really relate to what I'm trying to find out. I thought it might draw more attention from Mac users if I created a thread for it.

Dan - I moved everything from my old G5 to this new one and upgraded from 9 to 9.5 at the same time. The preference setting came from version 9 and an older card. So without having to set preferences again - no warning is given.
It's not really a "blame" issue. I'm trying to find out if I have an isolated case or if there is a fixable bug. The 9.0 version of the software works fine with my original settings in this machine with this card. The only change I made was in the Maxon software. That made me think that they are the first people to contact about my question. It could be Apple's thing but the one variable has been C4D so therefore I'm asking Maxon to look at it first. It could be that the programmers at Maxon intened for 9.5 to work fine as well. And if they did intend it to work as 9.0 does and can make a change so it does take advantage of those openGL settings, that would be great. And if not, that's life. I just didn't expect to get an upgrade that didn't take advantage of the same hardware features that the previous version did.
sincerely,
