I've been planning a short with friend for quite some time now and I've been working on this damn car for too long. I barely have any time to work on 3d so my progress is slow. I hate showing my work cuz I never have time to do work on it, but I just wanted to show you guys this...

Also I'm planning on making this available on turbo squid so that I can try to afford a new graphics card. I've put more money into software then into hardware :(

Anyhow please let me know what you think.

Hey guy, it looks great! But please give us another perspective view, so we can see better the shape of the car. Looks like you have a hard edge in the union between the mudguard and the "piece that cover the engine" ... Sorry, i'm not english, i don't know its name, but i think u understand me... i hope! Well, don't know if this is cuz the perspective, so i claim another view.
Keep working hard on it!

its a poly mesh. I started with a spline outline then coverted a rect to a poly mesh and used the snap tool to match the verts to the spline. Then obviously lots of tweaking... trying to get my side windows in and I'm getting some kinking which is T-ing me off right now.

wow indeed, looks very nice. great modelling - all the pieces fit nicely and are edged where they need to be. looks very accurate!

Bah not enough time... had a chance to tweak the mesh and try a test car paint material... Still got some issues to work out.

Harsh C&C on the car paint will help me make it perfect so start chewing me out guys!

Is this the new M3 LTW or whatever it is with the CF hood, roof, and trunk deck? I would assume so. Anyways, I love it! Totally can tell what it is, 100%. I am a huge BMW fan, and this is definately near a perfect rendition of the E46

I think your car paint material is wayy too glossy right now. I can't really comment on the reflectivity cause it isn't really reflecting anything. Car paint would only be this glossy if it was black. You gotta town it down for lighter colours.

Looks like a normal 3-series coupe to me... :surprised

Bloody hell, a storm knocked the neighbors bloody tree into our damn cable line and totally messed up power cables (dont' have grouding wire anymore, and the cable for both tv and internet is dead!). This 40 ft tree just missed the house by 4 feet. Had to go to a relatives to finish up some work and gain net access :annoyed:

Anyhow, back to your questions:
Aor: I'll try to write a tutorial up on my method. But to briefly explain. I draw the entire car using splines. I spent a great deal of time setting that up because I it defines the structure of the surfaces, later tweaking becomes more difficult (as I have learned). Then I start building the mesh by converting a rectangle to a poly mesh and using the snap tool to align the mesh to the spline outline. Because the outline is in the shape of the vehicle in 3d, I can use the snap along edge option to allow me to quickly build the surface. I'll posts some shots l8r when I get my main comp up and running again. After my model if filled in with enough detials, I go in by hand to clean up edges and make sure the surfaces all line up. Again hope that gives you a rough idea of what I'm doing i'll try and write it up when I ahve some time. If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

MrPunkin: Yes the GTR version of the M3 and the CLS (I belive... have a pict on my main comp... I'll look it up when I get it going again). I might be able to tweak my mesh into an M3 Chassis later. That would be an interesting addition to my model.

gfx: Finally a real crit... thanks there. You're right I just showed it to another friend of mine who mentioned the same thing. Perhaps I should post the detials of my material to try and get some help tweaking it. I'll begin by toning the ref down. However I do want to retain a high gloss look. I'll post some pics after I work on the material more.

Well its about 3 am now so i'll be turning off now, thanks for the crits, appreciate the feedback.

Man, me and my bro would love to see the completion of this model.

I have a 02 325Ci and my bro has a 03 M3, and we are huge bmw addicts. But anyways, I don't think I've seen a decent bmw 3D model anywhere. But yours is shaping up really nicely judging from the structural chassis and framework you've established.

Two questions:

1. You are going to have a sunroof too right?
2. Where did you attain decent e46 blueprints or references? or did you take pictures?

Hope to see more updates! Keep it up man.

Ok, i reduced the reflectivity... here are two colored versions with some objects for the car to reflect... advice on how to make it apear more realistic would definatly be appreciated.

crit hard please.

BTW this isn't any finalized color or anything. Just to show how it affects reflectivity...

wlau: I will get it finsihed. I'll consider doing the sunroof. Haven't though about those things yet

I think that artist should deal with finishing a model at first :D and then start to deal with materials
