Wow is that the rumord Massivly multi-player game square is working on ? At any rate is awesome !! They were able to make game characters look like walking talking concept art from a really good concept artist .. :buttrock:

Nah, Square's MMORPG is Final Fantasy XI (http://www.playonline.com/ff11/index-fr.html) which is already out in Japan and will be released sometime in 2003 in the US. The movie posted above is for the Unlimited SaGa game, the latest installation of Square's SaGa Frontier series (That's the game title given at the end of the movie, in case you weren't paying attention...). What does Adobe have to do with this? Well, the link to Adobe Japan (http://www.adobe.co.jp/motion/spotlights/square/main.html) talks about how Square uses Adobe After Effects for their game cinematics.

I can't find anything about Adobe. What did they have to do with it?

As for the cell shader, I dont think its that impressive. Looks a little like a last minute thing. Looks like a half assed cell shader thats trying to do painterly effect at the same time, but not really. I think Jet Set Radio has a much nicer look to their realtime cell shader.

it looks pretty sweet to me... what's it for i presume this is some game or other, but what about the technology, ps2? xbox? home pc?

i'd be happy if i had a celshader from one of my apps that was that good even non-realtime.

the adobe link is in the graphic section by the way, but not being able to babel a flash page makes it a little hard to understand.

I'll pass judement on this when I actually see it going, I hate sites that are too small to see anything on unless you're at 640x480

Looks quite nice from what they've shown. Beaker, I believe the effect they're going for is that of the concept art. JSRF's style is a lot different. I think this will be much prettier

Too bad it's in the Saga series (Saga Frontier wasn't really the best RPG around (heck, even my hard-core RPG playing friends didn't finish this one..))

Awell, it looks okay though, but so do a million of these RPGs that come out every year in Japan, the only ones we always hear about are from SquareSoft, and they make these half assed RPG (i hate those super clean perfect people design from them)0, not to mention every friggin' RPG from them is the same...)

Alright guys...flame that ass...bring it on :xtreme: ...

Yeah I guess I should have explained myself.

As Pomru said, it's Unlimited Saga from the Saga Frontier serie (which I too didn't like). But what I found quite awsome was the celshading used on the characters. The first image looks 2D, but only the background is as you can see when the rotation takes place. Look at the artwork on the main page and then the characters during the movie (such as the couple at the beginning and the girl at the kiosk at the end). It's identical, yet one is 3D the other 2D.

Adobe's role is unclear, but they must have developed a shader or something specificly for the game to acheive that look. This is definitly not your avarage celshading:bounce:

A little bit more detail about Adobe's role:

From The Magic Box (http://www.the-magicbox.com/game071002a.htm):
Unlimited Saga features illustration style motion graphics which are created using Adobe's technology. The game will also feature illustration style movie clips.

I still don't think that this is a MMORPG title because that would be economic suicide for Square. I've been hearing that one of the possible reasons behind the Square-Enix merger was Square's financial troubles caused by the expenses of running the FFXI servers (compounded by the poor box office performance of the FF movie). Since Square is finally digging itself out of one money pit (thanks to the success of Kingdom Hearts), I'm sure that they're not crazy enough to jump into another MMORPG project until they've built up a cash reserve.

I have yet to see an NPR demo more impressive than this: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/gfx/proj/wnpr/

Download the AVI. Then you will beg the developers to let you beta test. You will not take "no" for an answer. Eventually they will start ignoring your emails. Proceed to sulk phase. :annoyed:
