Maybe u just checked the Edit Bone Mode or activated the shortcut key for that. Have a look in the Bone Tool.

Sorry , I didn't know you are using 4, in that case, I don't know how to solve your problem.Sorry.
Does the phenomenon happend all the time, or it happend sometimes ? I have some strange thing happend in bones too, and what I do is I open new MAX scene, reset, and merge with the bones I have, and the weird thing is gone.

I had this problem only for this one character. (and some other unexplained problems).
i said "had" because i already fixed it. when i unlinked my arm from the shoulder bone it appeared to be ok. so i unlinked it from it and made a new shoulder bone, so now it's ok.
maybe it's one of these bugs that say: "upgrade me"
(by the way i tried also what u said with the merge but it didn't help.)
but tanx anyway

I have this weird things happend too in my rig, aspecially if the bones was the mirror copy! My problem is with hand and arm too, 1 of the arm can be IK easily with no problem, the mirror one have the flipping hapend when I add the point object as swivel point.

did you mirror the bones together with the ik chain?
i also had problems when i mirrored my bones (my max crashed) so i had to make the mirrored bones from the begining.

I mirror the bone befo I link the arm to shoulder, and befor apply any IK chain. It went crazy aspecialy when it involved orientation Constraint.
I fix the orientation constraint problem by align the controler (eg spline , or dummy) to the bone local XYZ .
