Does anyone know what causes this?

I have experienced this issue with maya and sub-ds. If you are useing renderman for maya you shouldnt be getting this problem. If you are using maya software or MR, (MR would make sence since you are doing SSS) sub-ds UV maping is simply broken. No worries though. In mental ray you can convert a poly model to a sub-d at rendertime. So you will need to convert all your sub-d models into polys, but dont worry, they will be sub-ds when you render. To enable this feature go under Window>Render Editors>mental ray>Approximaton Editor. Select the poly model you want smoothed and click under "Subdivision Approx. (nurbs, subdiv) and hit the create button. You can add more meshes to that group with the add button. If you want to get technical with performance you can go into some of the more detailed settings. But doing what I just outlined should give you a nice smooth model with no UV problems.

Hope that helps
Ryan
