View Full Version : Game Art Comp 1: Wanzai
wanzai 12-08-2002, 01:22 PM Hi guys,
Reposting my challenge, hadn't uploaded anything anyway.
Well here is the "concept art". I'd rather call it a rough sketch though...
To the backgrounds of this guy:
Guan-Di derives from the famous historical person "Guan-Yu" in the Three Kingdoms period of China. He was a man of virtues, had courage, integrity, loyality etc. and was a great fighter. So people made God of War out of him to honor him.
So actually he was a good guy and is a good god, but I find him so god damn cool I had to choose him. Hope I'd manage to make him an evil boss
His trademarks are: red face, long, straight black beard, his armor (but not as seen in my design though) and his legendary halberd. Oh and he had this famous "red rabbit horse", too, but due to the polycount limitation, I'll have to leave it out.
Starting modeling now.

i really like where this is going, keep up the good work. he looks really cool
only thing really is maybe take some polys from elsewhere and use them in the legs, they seem a little bare at the moment. :wip:

Looking awesome so far. I like that you chose Chinese mythology, that should make this model stand out from what others are doing. Your model is so close to your concept drawing, right down to the swirl on the shoulder pad - looks like you're right on track! You have plenty of more polys to smooth this out, so I think we can expect a really great model when it's done. It'll be interesting to see what you do with the textures.

Thanks for the comments :)
But I'm having a second thought about my entry.
It may be a little cute and cartoonic, but definitely not "most visually impressive", as stated in the contest rules. I'd consider a boss impressive by his huge size or kick ass design or both.
Due to polycount limitation, I'd go for design and drop the size aspect.
What I find a good example for this is Sephiroth as the thoughest secret boss in Kingdom Hearts. Although he is normal-sized, but after all those huge monsters, he really stands out with style.
So I tried to come up with a new concept. I don't know if this one is cartoonic enough to be valid for the contest, but I'm going to discard the existing one and restart with this anyway. No matter contest or not.
I wouldn't manage to work on it til tomorrow evening anyway. So C&C and some discussions are welcome.

Wow, this is unusual. The bunny might work but I would make the chest less pointy.
I like the new shoulderarmor better

I like this concept even better than the last one! It's pretty bad-@$$, yet still stylized enough for a platform game. I would think you'd be able to modify your existing model rather than just scrapping it and starting over, but maybe you want the practice. Good luck!

Thus far I agree, although the first try was a pretty good job.

I think Sephiroth is pretty simple and standard. He wouldn't get much attention if it wasn't for the way he is presented or his music theme.
About the new sketch:
I don't really like it except for the head. The rabbit doesn't really look vicious. I makes him look like one of the funny Tekken characters. By the way, you are not a fan of Tekken, are you?
The shoulder armor is far too down and looks like he could have problems keeping balance with it. I can't recognize what the right hand is supposed to be holding.
I think I would like it better if you could make a recognizable rabbit on his armor using color and texture and less form. The legs are much less decorated or protected than the upper parts of his body.
You should go for a solution between the two drawings.

It IS supposed to be funny, corresponding to the rules.

Yeah you're right. The presentation and the music theme do the most part of it.... and not his size. That's what I meant. Style is not only about the look. OK I have to admit that this argumentation doesn't really apply to my chracter as there would be no introducing cutscenes and kick ass music theme.
BTW Sephiroth is a bit more stylized in KH, more cartoony to fit in that universe and with his single wing attached.
As for some other suggestions, it's mostly my lack of drawing practice to blame for. Usually my models are better balanced than the drawings. More to come later today.

Tweaked the old model and modeled that funny head.
The right arm which wasn't visible on the sketch#2 is supposed to be mutated and have his halberd merged into it.
Now it's even under 1800 tris. So I have plenty polys left to define the right weapon arm and make the legs better.

Looking great, the only crit I'd give is that the legs are way too small. I think that the addition of colorful textures will be important in making this look cartoony and not too scary. Love the rabbit armor, this guy should look very unique when done!

I think what strikes me the most is the size of his torso vs the size of his pelvis. And I'd spend a few more polys on the legs.
Good start so far man :D

looks more like a cartoon is not a bad idea ....
i just afriade it will lost Guan-gong's sprite....
i like the 1st model more...
anyway ...it is a good idea that choose chinese hero.:p

@kunlun
You're right. I do notice that the more I proceed defining him the more I distance it from both my own sketch(es) and even further from the original Guan-Di.
I'm not really happy about that, but more important to me is now to complete my original design and make it work as a boss character. Maybe the first try was a better "cute Guan-Gong", but as I said before, I find that a bit boring for a boss character.
I'm curious about your opinions! Apart from some more tweaks, this model is the release candidate ;)

I'm not sure if I'll have time again to finalize things before the deadline so here it is.
Known issues (which I probably won't have time to fix) include:
- I'm not happy with all aspects of the textures.
- only standard envelopes from physique, barely tweaked
- ...therefore I don't have complete freedom to pose him better
- boring beauty render.
EDIT: cleaned up the missing images.

Holy $#*&!!!
I am REALLY impressed. The pink and green colors go well together. The texture work is absolutely beautiful. It compliments the style of the model well, and is much more detailed than what you would expect for a cartoony look, yet still works perfectly.
I also like how you blended the arm with the weapon, reminds me of the character "Nightmare" in SoulCalibur. Plus I don't think the beauty render is boring, it's great! Although the pose isn't as dramatic as it could be, it is still dynamic and fits the character.
As far as crits go, I only have a few. The pants texture could use more detail. Also, I think the feet would have benefitted with a few more polys alloted to them, right now they seem too blocky. The hand texture appears to have many seems which could have been blended better.
But other than that, it's perfect! Congradulations on a job well done! I would love to go head to head with this guy in a game. :bounce:
Be sure to enter it in the submissions thread. Just post all the images like you did here, along with your concept drawing, in one post. Good luck!

Well done Dude ... :)
My critique: I would have made the color of the bunny head a different color than green just to differ it a little bit from the plate Mail.
Whats the meaning of the chinise symbols on the sash ?

Thanks folks...
I was hoping for some feedback after "finishing" him last night. Now I look something like this... :insane: But thanks to you I regained some motivation :)
Damn! You noticed the parts I'm not happy with right away... :surprised: But there're some more ;)
@Bonsai
Yeah, I also think the rabbit would be better in another color, originally it was even red (cuz of the name of his horse, see above), but somehow it wasn't looking like plate mail. I'd have to work some more on this one. The current version will have to do it for the time being.
The Chinese on the ... sash is what it's called? simply says his name. Could use a better font, though. Some kind of motto instead would be nice too.
@sanhueza
The shoes actually have some polies on them. Originally they were nearly round and looked more oriental than asian.

WOW.. nice Model and UV map.
Do you mind to share your tehcnique in makeing your UV map ?
I notice that your UV is Spread OUT evenly and almost make a SQUARE FORM, how did you do that ?
Would you please at least give us some TIPS on doing the UV ? :)
Thanks in advance

Of course I don't mind.
It's just A LOT of manual adjustments :) If you want the map vertices lined up, simply scale them down in one axis (in max 4 that is. I don't know if other packages have this built-in).
Hope this answers your question.

So basicly the right answer is A LOT OF ELBOW GREASE :)
Okay... I'll make sure my model have that much work :)
Thank you again for sharing your secret.
