Hmm, much better. Makes the former DS look like a clumpy brick. Thank you Apple for leading the trend in hardware design... again! :)

Nintendo Unveils DS Redesign
Smaller, more compact, and hitting Japan March 2nd.
by John Ricciardi (http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5443554), 01/26/2006 74.00 of 75 users recommend this story.
Nintendo (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147494#) today announced a newly-redesigned version of their DS handheld in Japan, confirming rumors that have been floating around the internet for the past few weeks. The "Nintendo DS Lite" features a smaller case design than the original DS and a higher-quality screen with four brightness settings. According to Nintendo, the name "Lite" is a play on words meant to emphasize both the system's lightweight design (it's about two ounces lighter than the previous DS) as well as its lighter, brighter screen. We contacted Nintendo for further information and were able to confirm a few extra bits of info beyond what was issued in the release. For starters, the new DS Lite will continue to play Game Boy Advance games (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147494#) as well; some users have already expressed concern that the GBA slot might have been removed from the new design in order to save money, but we can confirm that this is not the case. In addition, Nintendo is planning to launch the system in three different colors in Japan, though the actual colors have yet to be determined. The only image released thus far shows a white DS Lite, but Nintendo hasn't yet decided if that will be one of the final choices come launch day. Furthermore, while the physical size of the new DS is smaller (133.0 x 73.9 x 31.5mm -- the old DS was 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.9mm), the actual screen itself will remain identical in size to that of the original. And finally, those of you with giant man-hands can rest easy, as the original DS will continue to be sold alongside the new Lite version (at least in Japan).

The DS Lite will be released in Japan on March 2, 2006, and will retail for 16,800 yen (approximately $145 at the current exchange rate).

i heard the rumors, now its true. i hope they bring it out in different colors.

i was also hoping they would include a SD memory slot or package this (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=246&products_id=6239&) in with the DS to enable mp3s on the ds... here is to wishful thinking.

Yea there will be four colours on release, these colours have been undecided as of yet.

Yea the play yan is cool but i think it is better suited for the game boy micro. I wear mines round my neck, I am also able to watch a two hour anime on it with subtitles. even though people find that hard to believe, it depends on how you compress the video .

And to think I just got the red DS for Christmas. :banghead:
Well I'm a Nintendo Sucker, so I'll be buying one of those.
Hopefully they will release a limited one like the Famicom or NES edition.
They could easily release a Game & Watch one.

yea me 3 I had two copies of it, the original and then the keyring version, and a friend of mine borrowed it 5 years ago and i have never got it back... i miss it nowI really do, i think i should hunt her down! I also had the super mario brothers one with the scrolling screen, which was a rare thing for those hand held games, and bombsweeper which is a game that still fills me with much inspiration. Did anybody else also have one of those tomytronic toys?

that visalization wasnt made by nintendo, sorry i should have stated, it was made by a person on the 4cr forums. Its appearance probably comes down to the amount of time he had to make it ( a few hours) and without any knowledge of it before he woke up in the morning.

This Week in Japan: DS Lite http://www.next-gen.biz/images/dothr.gif

This week's Famitsu isn't its usual horn of plenty, so we'll take the opportunity to talk about how DS Lite has been received in Japan. At least according to Tim Rogers...http://www.next-gen.biz/images/stories/Abstracts/tokyo2.jpg The Nintendo DS redesign, called Nintendo DS Lite, is not hinted at in this week's Famitsu. It's impossible that they didn't know already; they were just courteously waiting out Nintendo's announcement. According to Nintendo's press release, the unit will "appeal to the older players, and women." I guess it will do this by not looking like a toy.

Nintendo DS units are still sold out everywhere all over Japan. This is troubling. As of last night, no shops in Akihabara were running preorder campaigns. I had gone to Akihabara to buy Treasure and Sega's game Bleach; I was foiled: every store was sold out.

I really shouldn't have gone to the anime/game-otaku district to buy a game based on an anime game developed by the game otaku's favorite game company.

Either way, I asked a manager at AsoBitCity why the DS is still sold out. He told me that "Nintendo reports no shipments through February. That doesn't mean that shipments won't show up. It just means they aren't reporting it. Chances are they planned to just coast out to the redesign release on the stock they had." Well, that didn't work. "No, it didn't! Still, already, today, we got like fifty phone calls about the DS lite. We're rushing to set up something for pre-orders tomorrow."

The Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara, the world's largest electronics retail store, which is also still sold out, told me the same story, only the guy didn't smile when he said it. He had beads of sweat on his forehead. Poor guy. If you ever come to Tokyo, check out that Yodobashi. It's quite the spectacle of foot traffic.

Feels Like Micro

A friend who works at Hori (Japan's most-trusted third-party controller and accessories manufacturer) told me over lunch last month: "I'm thinking of buying a DS. A new one. A WHITE ONE." I said, "Yeah?" He said, "Oh yeah. ON MARCH SECOND." He did this thing with his eyebrows. I guess I was a little slow to react. I think he was giving me permission to unleash this information onto my readership. Sorry for my negligence [sound of editor groaning].

I phone him today; he says "Yeah, we're doing screen covers and all that." He says they have a demo unit in the office. I say, "Oh yeah?" He says. "Yeah. To get the dimensions and all that." He tells me the surface feels smooth. The buttons click like the DS's current buttons, though the D-pad feels like that of the Gameboy Micro. "It feels solid." I ask about the screen. He says, "It doesn't turn on. There's nothing inside it." Well, that's to be expected, I guess.

Meanwhile, the reality strikes a man who works at Sony: "This new DS looks both like an iPod and it looks at least as cool as the PSP."

I personally await my first chance to look at the screen. AsoBitCity reports that demo stations will be available as soon as two weeks from now. They're moving fast -- or else they've been planning slow. It's interesting, at any rate.

The system will launch on March 2nd, the release date of Square-Enix's Children of Mana. This will mark the second time Nintendo has launched a reworking of a new handheld device on the same time as the first high-profile Square-Enix title for that handheld (previously the Gameboy Advance SP and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance). No word has been released on special bundles, though it's safe to say that the "special bundle" will most likely involve people just buying both and then running to the nearest cafe to try it out. So the game, a console, and an espresso.

Unfortunately the new DS does not solve the primary problem I had with the original: the face buttons were too small and close together. I sometimes get cramps playing Mario Kart DS on it.

Last I heard was that MS were planning a Value pack and an Advanced pack. The Value pack comes with just a backpack (instead of a wrist strap).
Rumour has it that the Advanced pack also comes with a back injury preventing stabilizing harnass/corset stylized ala Halo 2. It also comes with a trolley carrying three high powered car batteries and a set of jumper cables (just in case). :)

I think that I will wait for Microsoft's portable...

DS Lite Photos
Thanks to an FCC filing, some new shots and details.
by Craig Harris (http://ds.ign.com/email.html)

February 8, 2006 - Nintendo recently filed its upcoming Nintendo DS Lite system for FCC approval. And in this approval process, shots of the system have been made publicly available on the FCC website. This is the first time since the system's announcement that the system's been documented with photos, and this is also the first time that the edges and bottom of the system have been revealed.

This photoshoot confirms many new details about the new DS Lite design:

<li>The stylus is now stored horizontally in the system's right side, instead of the original's vertical/back orientation.

<li>The DS Lite will ditch the Game (http://ds.ign.com/articles/686/686966p1.html#) Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS AC adapter port for the more compact Game Boy Micro AC adapter port.

<li>The Game Boy Advance slot on the DS Lite will have a protective, removable slot cover to protect the port when not in use. And most likely to make gaming a bit more comfortable on the fingers that grip down there.

<li>The headphone jack and volume switch are in the identical position as the standard DS, and remain unchanged.

<li>Power is now activated by a slider switch on the right side, just above the Stylus slot. It is no longer a button press. To prevent players from accidentally turning on or off the system, the slide switch must be slid towards the right and held for two seconds.

<li>The internal Model name for the DS Lite is USG. Previous model names for past Nintendo (http://ds.ign.com/articles/686/686966p1.html#) handheld systems include DMG for the original Game Boy, CGB for Game Boy Color, AGB for Game Boy Advance, AGS for the GBA SP, OXY for the Game Boy Micro, and NTR for the original Nintendo DS.

Click on the media link below to check out all the angles of the Nintendo DS Lite system. It's scheduled for a March 3 release in Japan, with a US and Europe release following sometime in the future.

Nintendo Unveils Features for DS Handheld

By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer Thu Feb 9, 12:52 PM ET

Nintendo Co. announced new wireless features for its DS portable video game player Thursday, including a free service that will let consumers beam game demos and other content directly to the device.

At least one game for rival Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/finance/ap/ap_on_hi_te/storytext/games_nintendo_ds/18006104/*http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=sne&d=t) - news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/biz/ap/ap_on_hi_te/storytext/games_nintendo_ds/18006104/*http://biz.yahoo.com/n/s/sne.html)).'s PlayStation Portable offers a more robust feature. Teammates in "SOCOM: U.S. Navy (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=U.S.+Navy) SEALs Fireteam Bravo" can talk to each other wirelessly during battles.

Fils-Aime added that a slimmed down, all-white Nintendo DS Lite would go on sale in Japan next month.

Handheld video games and hardware helped buoy the industry to record sales of $10.5 billion in 2005, according to the NPD Group research firm.

Nintendo said it has sold about 4 million DS systems in North America since it was launched in late 2004. Another 4 million PlayStation Portables have been sold in North America since the unit went on sale last March, according to Sony.

Probably an environmental thing. They want you to recycle it instead of throwing it away if it's busted. Some harsh chemicals in there, most likely.

Mario Kart - racing online

i would start with one of those, but i would wait for the DS Lite. also, Nintendo is starting to put kiosks in stores that will allow you to dl demos of a bunch of games. also remember, you have the whole back lot of GBA games to play [Mario vs Donkey Kong is a great action/puzzle game].
