View Full Version : Confirmed Maya 7 runs on Intel iMAC with no problems!

ok sorry if i come off a bit hyped up right now, I installed photoshop cs 2, after reading all the news about oh its soo slow, ur not going to want to run it, i was hoping for much, and well it loads quick! and runs fine with no problems for me (havnt done any real stressing yet but anyway)

i decided hmmm why not install maya, I was going to put in my linux disc that alias sent when they sent out my last update, but i thought why not try the PLE off their website.

so i downloaded the PLE, installed it on my HD, and boom! installed it

NO PROBLEMS AT ALL, i mean wow, the interface is snappy and everything, even better than on my powerbook g4, and this is emulated?

i installed snapx pro to make a movie and decided i might as well make a few screen caps for everyone to see who probly wouldnt believe it.

granted this isnt going to run as fast as it would if it was universal or if it was on a powermac g5 but honestly its pretty fast.

im willing to do some render tests just post links to your files here. I only have the ple installed on here but lets see what it can do.

forgive the lack of completeness on my website as i only made it this weekend, i havnt had time to add any of my work, so no real need in checking out any other links than tuts if you want to know how to install ram in ur imac, going to upload the video file now of me playing around in complete and utter SHOCK on my imac.

just in case your thinking, any machine in the world can run that little file, here is another test with a 600+ thousand poly guitar model. the feedback isnt the same as on my amd machine but its better than on my powerbook, and acceptable to some, why you would need a 600+ poly model to be real time, is beyond me but this has been smoothed.

i just ordered it a week or so ago, it came in the mail yesterday, didnt have time to mess with it (and still dont) until the weekend.

im really impressed. and this is the low end iMac the 17inch version

I was beginning to think this wasnt even a ppc app, but info says its ppc and not universal its just fast (considering the emulation thats going on, and this is a budget graphics card with 128 megs of ram).

Thats pretty sweet, Im glad to see its alteast better than the G4 (powerbook) Which is what I have. Im probably gonna wait about a year to upgrade to a macBook Pro so that most things will be translated and bugs worked out etc.

Am I getting this right that you installed the linux version of maya instead of the OSX ??

nope sorry, this is the ple mac version.

and yes if you can wait, it would probly be best to wait until around september or so, when the next convention comes, thats when the powermacs should be out, and most apps should be universal by then, and you could probly pick up a nice refurbished macbook pro off apples site by then =)

edit-
im not sure how dynamics will work, im sure it probly wouldnt work well, but if your wanting to model, its pretty nice and responsive, even when your in sub-d mode.

havnt had time to play with it much, maybe this weekend i can say more, and run some benchmarks.

wow, I hope that rendertime goes down significantly when they release the Uiversal Binary. or for that matter, a version optomised for the intel chip.

From what I can tell its the slowest machine on the list??

or am I missing something?

is that rendertime cause it's emulated ?
.. or did i get something wrong ?

on my AMD X2 +4400 it renders this in 7:19 Minutes....

Yes, it's because it's emulated. The PowerPC code has to be translated on the fly to 486 instructions, hence the very poor performance. It's already quite amazing that such a complex program as Maya runs on Rosetta!

Yeah, the time seems to be weird. The other times in the link that was posted for the render test had three columns. Is this 59 seconds? Or 59 minutes? LOL

That scene renders in just under 40 minutes on my G4 1.5 Ghz Powerbook. The iMac renders it in 60 minutes and its EMULATED??

My god I cant wait until Maya has a Universal Binary out.
