I've usually only used Maya for Modeling and never tried to use textures. However lately, I've been messing around with UV Mapping and texturing and I was wondering how to clear some of the textures up, to make them appear more realistic. I have a bump map and a texture map for this wood finish, but it is so blurred.

Here is a picture of my problem, if you guys could direct me to either a tutorial that would help me understand this and/or give me some of your own tips that would be great.

Hi, Lurker28.

I think your problem lies with your textures itself. I think your texture resulotion might be too small for the size you are rendering at. Your texture resolution should be bigger than render resolution - if that makes any sense? For example: Say that render of yours is 640 x 480, then the wood texture on the tabletop should be at LEAST 640 x 640 in that visible area.

Hope this answers your question. Let me know if you still don't understand it.
Cheers!

I used the wood texture that comes with Maya 7.0. I do not know if this as a predetermind resolution. I'm not the best at creating textures so I wanted to start off with just messing around with the textures that Maya comes with using UV mapping before I try to use photoshop and create my own.

Do you have any suggestions on how to make it better without having to actually create a brand new texture, or I'm I going to have to live with an unclear texture because it is the default textures that come with maya.

Open up the attribute editor, goto the file node and try changing the Filter type.

HamburgerTrain - Turning off the filter might work in this case. I will definitely make the Texture cripser, but I think it will become very pixelated. I do believe that the actual texture resulotion is the problem here.

Lurker28 - Unless you want to Google a nice big wood grain texture, my only advise is to repeat/tile the texture. This will make the grain on the table surface smaller, but I think it will make the texture appear crisper without pixelating it.

Sure hope this helps.
