View Full Version : Having problems with the matte material...

Hi there! I'm having a problem with the matte material. Let's say I have a few characters that are standing in a room. I rendered the room out seperately (for various reasons). Now I want to render a layer with the characters walking around. I need their shadows to appear on the floor, but I don't actually want the floor rendered. So I apply a mate material to the floor to ry and make it invisible and check "recieve Shadows" so that the shadows will still render. This has worked in the past, but I must be doing something wrong because the entire floor renders out as solid black instead.
I think maybe this has something to do with the checkbox within the matte material that says "Opaqu Alpha", but I rendere with and without that checkbox checked and get the same result. Any ideas what's going on here?

You wrote that you made the floor invisible. What do you mean? When you apply a matte/shadow material, leave it visible, check receive shadows and uncheck cast shadows in your case, because you only want the shadows of your characters.
Probably the transparent parts of your material show the black background? Try another colour to see, if your shadows are rendered.
Render out as .tga to leave everything but the characters and their shadows transparent.
You'll use a compositing software anyway, don't you?
It would be better to render the shadows separately (render elements) and comp them onto the background to have more control about the colour and the transparency.

Hope this helps
