Br0nZiLLa 12-23-2001, 07:34 AM I made a VERY simple character (only to try the biped thing), now ive made the biped how do i atache it to the body so i can animate it? Is it with the modifier physique? please help.. :(
Thanks in advance.

well physique kinda suck.. unstable and not the easiest to work with.
I would recommend the standard Skin modifer in max.. well..
just move and rescale your biped limbs to fit your character model.
then apply the skin modifier to your character mesh.
click 'add bones' in the skin modifer and select the appropriate biped limbs..
then click 'edit envelopes' and use radius or drag the envelopes till all the correct areas around the bones are red and have nice yellow/orange blend in the endings.
that should do the trick for starters.

Evidently. Dog ate the manuals, mm ?
Use either Physique or Skin. I would recommend Physique, because its more commonly used for a Biped setup. Personally, I turn off all the envelopes and apply influences to all the vertices by hand (because I'm used to doing it that way in Lightwave), it's cleaner that way too.
Something I would recommend, which is very simple for all those who's dog ate their manuals: F1. Even when you have the books, using F1 is better because you can search it, bookmark things, etc. If you're going on a trip, having the books is great though. There is no difference, as far as I can tell, between the real manuals and the help.

i allready found out how to atache the biped to the body, only it looks crappy when moving a limb, that must the vertex weight...Is it better to just make your own skeleton with bones rather than using biped?

it's great that you found out your self.. that's the best way anyway..
I don't think it's biped's fault that your skinning looks crappy.
you probably just need some more time, trimming your skinning.
crappy?.. could you be more specific?
is the skinning leaving out vertices or is it just creating ugly deformation..
and what did you use.. physique or skin?

Well what happens is, everything goes well till the part where ive planted the biped into the "body", theen i selected (example) te right arm and moved it, which had an acid effect, some skin moved along well and the other stayed in its place makin an odd kind of "acid over the skin"effect if u know what i mean.

yup.. you've got to use some more time ajusting your envelopes to get all the vertices in them.
you could give the skin modifer at shot.. If you havn't already.
you don't have to use physique.. just because it comes with CS.. use whatever is best and fastest for your task ahead.
BTW Bones Pro 3 is a breeze work with..

The best way to use the envelopes is to paint them?..well i think id better do some of the tutorials that max has in the help section

paint.. what?! no..
just select the envelope thingies..

not that there is anything wrong with painting.. it's just something that you usually do later..

the orange gizmo kinda thing around a bone, th ebigger that is the more vertices it will move along when u move a bone?

ahm.. yes.. the RED one (big arrow pointing)..
don't mind the orange cage on the picture
(thouse are lattices to help deformation)
hope it works out... =O)
