______________________________MORE GROUPS IN POST 2_________________________
EXPLORATION THEME
some additional words that might help to get an idea for the topic: DISCOVERY - ADVENTURE - TRICKY - ARCANE / The additional words should allways be treated in combination with EXPLORATION.
RULES
Every group has two (not more not less) participants > one is responsible for the 2D and the other one for the 3D process. In the end there should be a finished 3D image.
GOAL
The goal is to finish a 3D image wich follows the whole path from developing the idea, design, composition, modelling, compositing in a team projekt. EDIT 2Feb: To do justice to 2D also, every group has to deliver a final 2D establishing shot (like a milestone) which describes the scene that should be developed in 3D. It is not neccessary to make it perfect in look - it just has to describe the final intention. In the end we would like to show both images together.
IMAGE SIZE
EDIT 6Feb: The image zize of the final 3D image has to be minimum 3000px x 2182px with 300dpi to have at least an image printable in DIN A4 Format. The 2D establishing shot must not have print resolution > We leave it optional to every group to do so but it has to be at least 1600px in one side at 72 DPI resolution to have an image wich can be posted in the forums.
WORKFLOW
The 2D guys are leading the 2D process where concepts and the ideas for the challenge topic have to be done. The 3d guys assist the creation process with comments and rough thumbnail drawings. The 3d guys are leading 3D the process where all the ideas and the creations wich where developed together will build up. During this time the 2D guys have to assist the 3d elaboration with refined designs, details and everything needed to keep the modelling phase smoothy. At composition both group members work together with the rendered material and develop the final image. Depending on the knowledge cross overwork is allowed but it has to be clear who leads the 2d progress and who the 3d development.
INTENTION
Every artist from different fields get an inside of how the others knowledge and skills. This effect should be increased by working together on one image. The teamwork situation brings the skills of each together with focus to optimize those skills in terms of the production pipeline to get the work finished in time. This challenge gives a very good opportunity to refine own skills regarding comprehensive field of works.
DEADLINE
The deadline for the CollabBATTLE is 26. JUNE. In the end we will put all the stuff made (finished and unfinished) together and see what finaly came out.
JOINING PROCESS
If you intend to join please post the names of both participants (donīt forget to mention who makes 2D and 3D) and please prepare the following image (in post 2) with your avatars so that we can add them on the first post (frontpage). Every group opens an own thread in the 3D-Wip section with the following description: CollabBATTLE "EXPLORATION" - name and name. Below every goupbadge you can grap withing this thread from the other participants. From this thread we will provide a link which leads to the threads.
Every group gets a JPG headline wich has to be placed in the first post of the thread to keep everything visually united.
Then you are offically in the game.
no group limitation but > final entry deadline 10th february
The joining process has a deadline because the 10th february is 3 weeks after the challenge-beginning wich is almost one third of the whole challenge time. After that it will be difficult to get the project finished anyway. Sorry if we offend someone but we didnīt expect the challenge to grow this big. We intend to try running this challenge without moderator help cause they are packed with work themselves.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION !
-Everyone who is interested to join but donīt know someone to build up a group can post a comment within this thread. It is helpful to post some of your work that other members who are interested also can get an idea of your preferences and skill level.
-please make sure you store your linked images on your sever properly. this helps keeping your challenge threads readable for a long time.
-And please prevent changing the avatars during the challenge period cause the people get used know to them and its quite anoying to change those frequently at frontpage.
Itīs like in the big challenges just a bit different. But if you still have some questions ask Dimi, JamesMK, FlyingP or fahrija for further information.
HAVE FUN!

Those two little "pics" say 2d DUDE and 3d DUDE. Isn't that Gender insensitive? There ARE ladies who'd like to join, and let's not forget the hermaphrodites. They are probably VERY OFFENDED and likely to contact the ACLU over this. Prepare for a NASTY legal battle and subsequent dissolution of this website!!

Uhmmm,...i think for the heath of this forum...better post them in here....with an increment number (for example wip2d01...wip3d01 ...and so on..) and maybe place on a corner the pair's avatars image ....
I don't know if it's better for each pair to open his own thread ...maybe this way every pair's wips are all together.
..OR....
If the mods have no objections to this....maybe
Open a thread with the title " 1st 2D/3D CollabBattle - {Names here}"
at least this is what has been done in past duels...maye this the way to go - so that the threads have some nice order and be easy to find.....

We post everything here into this place! > donīt be shy and also post the rough thumbnails
EVERYTHING that leads to the final image. So that everyone of each group can see each others development and each group pushes the others. If we make separate threads I think
this challenge get spread out to much and some group threads get lost in the pages.
.
Rebeccak
01-26-2006, 05:02 PM
Just my two cents, but I think it might be better if each time had their own thread ~ as with the Spectacular Challenge.
Use a naming convention which is always the same -
CollabBATTLE - name and name
Posting everyone's wip in one thread like this one would be a nightmare...:argh:
Maybe Fahrija can create a thread that links all of the threads together, as I do with the personal Anatomy Threads on the Anatomy Forum, like this (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2817397&postcount=12):
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2817397&postcount=12
If Fahrija updates this thread regularly, then it should be easier to find everyone's work. :)
EDIT: Hehe, just saw Fahrija's post...totally up to you guys, this was just my suggestion. :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Fahrija
01-26-2006, 05:08 PM
what now?
I can do the link thing like rebecca suggested > but its much easier for me if each group post their link here to add them at the first page. So I donīt have to search them in the wip thread.
And we can use this thread as a basestation / question&answers / status report
.
Rebeccak
01-26-2006, 05:14 PM
Fahrija,
That can work too, but the nice thing about having a naming convention for peoples' individuals' threads is that if they name things according to the convention, you can just run a search on the forum every day and find all the new threads to link ~ most likely they'll be at the top of the forum anyway, as they'll be new threads. The only problem is, only the forum leaders of the particular forum you're in can rename threads, so if someone doesn't use the right naming convention for the title of their thread, they won't be able to change it.
But, you can also create an internal link in one giant thread as I did with the Anatomy Reviews - for example:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2468773&postcount=2
It's pretty labor~intensive to find everyone's posts though, but if you do it on a daily basis, it's not so bad. :)
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Fahrija
01-26-2006, 05:22 PM
OK > we do it like rebecca suggested:
Every group opens up a thread: CollabBATTLE "EXPLORATION" - name and name
This thread will be the base where I update the things on the top (first thread site) > From here the people can use the links to go to the different threads.
It would be good if the people post here some sort of status report e.g > started the modelling so I can do some sort of statistics below each group avatars.
what do you think?

damn Iīm a slow writer :scream:

Lets not fix it to much. I think the outcome definetley has to give an feeling of exploration which means just for example > new worlds - unknown artefakt - strange item - new races > to get rid of the science factor I added the words below for example exploring something in an adventurely way or giving it a more arcane feeling. Makes that sense?
Damn I should take some more english lessons. :banghead:
EDIT:
Iīve added some more information in the JOINING PROCESS description.

I could be totally off base,
but it might also help
if artists (both 2D and 3D)

posted links to some of their work
so that others could see what kind of stuff they do

Some folks have links in their signatures

hey guys, I'm still looking for a 2d partner - some links to my work are below:
Just a note about the items below - most of them are works in progress as i had to stop work on them to work on my animation portfolio to get myself a job - i will be done with that next week.
These items below are for an effects shot i was working on where i was turning myself into a statue using a greenscreen to place myself on a ledge overlooking mts:
www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_stace.jpg (http://www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_stace.jpg)[please note some details
missing due to fact that i would be wearing a dress for this shot and those areas (eg knees) would not be seen]

www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_rockyCliffFace.jpg (http://www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_rockyCliffFace.jpg) - detailing done in zbrush
The shot below was an assignment piece...i just need to fix the lighting on the front leg and blur the edges of the statue
www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_statueShot.jpg (http://www.staceyfuller.com/posted_forum_files/explorationChallenge/wip_statueShot.jpg)
These two below are almost ready to go into zbrush for detailing work:

Hi Silvio,
Thanks for the the offer. I love your works, you have great skills and experience. Must be great adventure go to challenge with you!
I saw your website, especialy your character design and... I don't think your style and mine would mesh that well. Don't get me wrong, you do beautiful work, I'd want to pair up with someone doing a pretty similar style like mine... You do great work, though, and I'm sure you'll find someone else in 3D who will be a great fit. Good luck, and thanks again for the offer! :)

May I create another account and enter as my own 3D partner?
But thatīs not the intention of the challenge. The interaction with another artist in order
to finish a teamwork project is the most important aim within this challenge. And thatīs not comparable with working alone.
did you talk to SERCOX? he searched for a 2D artist some pages earlier. In case you did not just pm him and find out if this might fit.
I can do the 3d-part, searching for a 2d-dude. Just PM me or mail me

wow.. another group.. great! and I'm still without 2D partner..
I'm just looking for some 2D guys in previous challenges... :)
Want to team up with me? Am fairly inexperienced, but you can check my WIP thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3211802) if you want. Not entirely sure what this is about, or what I'll be expected to do, but if you're still looking for a partner...
Of course... you've got some pretty awesome stuff; I think you could beat me eight times over in 2D as well! But, just thought I'd offer myself out.

Wow - I've already received 2 proposals and it's only been like...15 minutes. Am I allowed to be the 2D artist for more than one 3D modeler? I mean - is it ALLOWED for one person to be a part of more than one team? It'd be even more good excercise...excercise I would love to partake in!

hi Johanna,
I would recommend to just work in one group. Itīs better you concentrate with one partner finishing a job rather than in two groups. Your work doesnīt end with the 2d establishing shot. you have to sketch and design al lot of details during modelling phase to help get finished the 3d image. And donīt forget the compositing. It will be very stressing to work on two renderings at one time.
What I mean is: believe me there will be work enough within a single group.;)

hi there. This looks pretty fun. Or as though it could be. Maybe. Anyhow, I could go either way on the 2d or 3d, but would actually prefer to go 2d. Which is part of why I'm posting here rather than pm'ing anyone. The other reason is that I'm in a bit of a situation.
Anyhow, as I said, I'm lazy. And I'd be entering this just to keep myself busy. And I'm not necessarily concerned with having a stellar final submission, though I'd like to have something decent to show. Also, I'm currently in 6th term at VFS... but I can't sleep. Ever. (Well... not often, anyhow.) School finishes at the end of the month, though. But then after that I plan on running off to the midwest for about ten days, I think. I would have minimal internet access, but I could probably send an e-mail a day for about a week of that time.
So if you're a 3d person and need a 2d person, you can drop me a line. Just bear in mind that... I'm pretty lazy. But I like doing concept work and stuff...
Here are a couple of pieces of concept work I did for another project I'm currently kind of working on slowly:

all righty... i read somewhere that even though we have our own WIP threads that we should also keep everyone updated in this thread.
Group 11 - Elsie & EricTheRed (thread pg 2 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=313560&page=2&pp=15))
we have the rough synopsis and the first concept sketches of the main character. blelow is the synopsis.
An innocent strawberry blonde haired girl sits on her bedroom floor with papers strewn about as she works away at a crayon drawing. To the veiwer, the drawing appears to nothing spectacular. It is merely the scribbles of a 4 year old little girl. Behind her, however, her room melts away to the otherworldly realm of the child's imagination of floating islands, rabbits in top hats, stone giants as big as mountains, ancient and forgotten machinery, and more.

I was talking tongue-in-cheak so don't take it too seriously.
But my point was that people keep mentioning sketches they've done or collaborative sketching sessions with thier teammates. It seems to me, these things should be posted, not just talked about, since the whole point here is to share the creative progress in its entirity with the cgtalk community.

understood... it's just one shortcoming of only having text for communication... kinda hard to grasp subtle nuances of intonation... didn't mean to sound defensive or offended or anything
i was merely coming from the angle that really most all of what we (Elsie & I) had so far was only written synopsis... plus i didn't think this was the thread for pics so only included the link to the page in our thread that contained the first concept sketches... but enough of this silly missunderstanding
on a side note...
Fahrija - I know this is pretty early on in the battle to be asking this question, but the answer could determine just how complex of a concept Ailsa and I develop. How much post render work (compositing of separate elements, color corections, etc.) will be acceptable?

Quick question regarding size. I don't want to sound like one of those people that complains about the size, poly etc requirements of a contest. So please forgive me. But Snake and I chose to do our entry with a 1:2.35 aspect ratio... er go at 3000 wide, we'd only be 1277 tall.
Do we have to scrap our composition to fit contest guidelines now?
Fahrija
02-09-2006, 12:42 PM
Do we have to scrap our composition to fit contest guidelines now?
No you donīt have to. :) Thatīs fine. Your image is 3000px wide - the other size is composition related.
Every group can choose their image proportions and composition regarding the aspect ration themselves. Nobody has to make it exactly DIN A4. It is just important that one side of the image tends to go to the pixel and dpi requirements just to make sure that it is printable.

I just checked out this challenge. I would love to take part in a project as the 2d side but I need a 3D partner. I'm mostly into sci fi and fantasy. Anyone who's interested either send me a msg or email me at surra_ss@yahoo.com. The deadline's in 2 days so if you're interested please contact me asap.
Here's some links to a few of my threads.

Grrrr, I only just saw this thread. Missed the deadline.
Anyway, I have no friends so it doesn't matter.
But it is a really cool idea. I will be watching the entries with great interest. It would be great to have this as a third category on the official challenges. :lightbulb

I really liked your spectacular entry, and you seem to be a Wayne Barlowe fan..... so sign me up! I probably won't be able to spare all that much free time, but I would like to do some more pesonal work, so I'll give it a go & we'll see what we can come up with.
