WinXP Check Disk: How often should it run? After every system crash? What are the chances of running it being necessary to fix any problems? Thanks.

Never, It will run itself if you have a fat32 drive which has messed up, but other than that you should only run it if you specifically find a problem.

Do Check disk and disk defragmenter cause any physical harm to hhds when we run them?

For average PC users, their disk can get fragmented pretty quickly. Over time, this will affect system performance. Therefore, Defrag should be run regularly. Defrag will detect error in the disk and alert you to run disk repair.

Running chkdsk and defrag too frequently will add to the wear and tear of the mechanical/magnetically components, the same as other normal disk read/write operations.

checkdisk only when diagnosing a problem

I remember that it was recomended before one wanted to do a capture or generally render intensive work to defrag the volume.
In a scsi raid 0, which I use as AV drive, whenever I do renders and video intesive stuff, apart from hearing the "coffee machine" drive crunching, afterwards I check the disk defrag, and most of the volume is in the Red land...

Also after installing apps, or setting up a pc, if you check C:\ is fragged to death.

Heh, checkdisc and defragging cause as much damage and wear to a disc as pissing in the ocean causes pollution. Running a defrag 24 hours a day won't affect the life expectancy of you drive in the slightest. Personally I will defrag the drive once every 3 months, and thats with video editing.

Hehe cool comparison.

I do a lot of rendering, and my drives don't get fragmented. Fragmentation depends on how much free space you have left, if it's low, it will fragment much faster. My drives have enough space and they rarely get fragmented.
